Ahh, it may just be a libgarmin issue that's not propogated to Navit. Have had no problems with 1.9GB Planner maps.

i thought the script would be handy to whoever is packaging. it searches for maps so the user doesn't need to edit xml

I was initially really excited as i thought this would open the way to off-road navigation using my garmin topographic maps. So i tested with the desktop linux version of navit first but the libgarmin claims to be unable to cope with the encrypted/locked german Topo-D maps.

I'd really love to use my hirez n810 instead of the original lowrez garmin!!!

Any chance of support for the locked maps? I do have a valid key for those and i'd really love to be able to use my n810 for geocaching ...

Garmin maps are commercial and propietary. Unlocking maps could be illegal so it's not possible from Navit. Try to contact Garmin and ask them if there's a way to do that.

All garmin maps are commercial and propietary. So what's the difference with the locked ones if i've purchased them legally?

You might also want to ask garmin if they allow you to use any of their other maps (encrypted/locked or not) in devices other then garmin units. I think we all know their answer. But this still doesn't mean that they are right and legally binding.

Maybe we can use custom maps (garmin format). in http://garminmapsearch.com/
you can find custom maps, and use in garmin devices and apps that use garmin files.

I hope this info help to you.

We found another solution for now: An older version of the german topomaps isn't encrypted and can be read by navit/libgarmin after some major help from the libgarmin author. I already have a nice looking topomap in navit this way and now i am working on a maemo port of this which'll then include my gpx/geocaching stuff.

Downloaded, installed, edited the XML file and still can't see the map.
Should i have the GPS paired with n800 to see the map?

even if i have a standalone unit and pda with maps, it would be nice to see on the N800 the map i'm making in Mapcenter2.

does author read this thread? any chance for navit advance? tried used latest release on my N810 - works but not stable, crashes

and I thing implementing maps autoloading - is not a big deal... in XML better have absolute folder name, then store maps in subfolders of this folder - then read all subfolders and show with complete path in menu

you just store maps as, for example (+ means directory)

Borocco Kingdom+ (country)
--- Main City.img (capital city)
--- Territory+ (other country part)
------ Sister's Village.img (some village)
------ Roadmap.img (other country roads)

and we have choice for each map in Navit

Borocco Kingdom/Main City
...
Borocco Kingdom/Territory/Roadmap
