The "N" is just marketing, don't put thought on it. These devices have nothing in common with the S60 N-series. It's just a family of products, marketing-wise.

I realise that it is all marketing, however the point I was replying to is the comment that 'it is not meant to be a consumer device' and thus it cant be compared to something that is polished. The marketing is not selling it as a developer device, it is being sold as a consumer device, as such it is fair to judge it as a consumer device.

I disagree that it's not a consumer device btw. Nokia IS a consumer company. It doesn't create stuff from geeks for geeks. The fact that it might not be consumer-ready or not, it's a different point altogether. But when these devices were designed and produced, they did have the end user/consumer in mind.

I agree that my N800 is not really ready for Joe Consumer. On the other hand, I'm so glad that Nokia got these devices out there. I love my N800, more than any computer I've owned since the 1980s, and if Nokia had held off until the devices were "polished" for consumers, I would be a much sadder man. The N8x0 devices feel like a real leap forward in terms of technology, and I'm willing to live with the frustrations in order to hold one in my not-very-wealthy hands.

I am also waiting with baited breath for the Next One, the one that will "blow our socks off". My N800 is looking pretty battered, after only 5 months, so I'm going to try the "I need a replacement because my old one is broken" tack with the Family Treasurer.

yes and no. Read enough of the statements in interviews and you will realize that there has been progressive targetting of consumer classes, starting with 'hacker' types (770). Iteration 5 (not here yet) will be the one finally intended for the mainstream.

And, combined with comments from roope about UI consistency and ease-of-use, I'm really hoping for some sock-blowing-offyness.

Certainly, Nokia's progressive marketing has been right for the devices that exist - it's just frustrating to see other device makers go from 0 to "good enough" whilst we're still only 60% of the way there (3 of 5).

As users, we're all getting high-hopes for rev. 5 - and as developers we're getting frustrated by the continued lack of openness in the details (as discussed on IRC last night)
