I even think the music slowed down. The processor spiked and then the battery was done.
Well, xmms isn't something I'd recommend for multitasking; as you point out, it does have its own problems, including an unquenchable thirst for CPU. I use mpd, and rarely get any glitches. (In OS2007, it would glitch whenever I scanned for networks; fixed in OS2008.) I don't use the RSS reader, but other playback options are much less brittle than xmms.

That really hits the nail on the head; multiple low quality apps are trouble. And they stay trouble even when you only have one open. If the apps are good, there should be no trouble from background tasks. (Implementation details, like that the background tasks run at low nice, can always kill you, but there's no inherent problems.)
With good apps, in a good multi-tasking system, more apps just slow the system down without causing serious trouble, and running a single app will always be fine.

In the ideal environment, IMO, even apps running independently of each other need to be, on some level, aware of each other. That's one big premise underlying Microsoft's .NET architecture. How much of that capability is or can be currently replicated on the tablets is another subject...

Eh? Why's that, and what sort of awareness you mean?

Perhaps I don't understand what you mean, but it seems to me pointless to have any IPC not because we need to exchange information to complete our separate tasks, but because we chance to be running on the same system. If you can't control the other tasks, why (and what) do you need to know about them?

Question for anyone who has actually used an iTouch or iPhone for reading and/or movie watching:

(1) Do you have a sense as to how it would be to watch a feature-length movie on the iTouch? To my surprise, the N800 is comfortably sufficient for the task, and my guess is that the iTouch would be too small. And do you know if it's possible to rip a DVD and get it into the iTouch in a practical way?

(2) Do you know how the iTouch is as a book reader? Again, to my great surprise, I really like reading books in FBReader.

Personally, I find the NITs to be right on the limit as small as mobile device media viewing. I've watched a few movies and shows in-flight on my mother's iPhone. While not a lot smaller, I did find it just a touch too small for my (admittedly biased) taste.

And just adding. How the hell do you watch a movie without a stand??
Do you just catch it and watch the whole movie in your hand?

let me guess you also rev your engine to redline when it's stone cold too.
I place my ipod close to my body in the winter. keeps it warm, saves the battery.

Applications are sometimes "siloed", even in frameworks that support multitasking. That can spell disaster when multiple apps want to make use of the same resources. Even if they launch one at a time, that doesn't prevent conflicts if there isn't at least some low-level awareness of each other's existence. By that I mean something like (example only): "Oh, I'm not the only app on the device that can interact with media. Fine. I won't lock up any media resources or leave anything of myself behind when I close that could interfere with the operations of one or more of my siblings".

I'm oversimplifying, but only because we have a diverse audience here. Application awareness should be the default behavior in any environment these days, now that we're long past basic DOS.

Hehe, the kickstand is straight-up the best feature of the N8x0s.

Ya seriously!
it is a wonderful feature which is almost taken for granted. WHich other
device has a kick stand. Not to mention i really loved the stand included with my old 7710 and 770. it was an engineering marvel!
