Confirmed. Workaround for enter key: use tab key twice to switch to the other panel and switch back to make enter key working again.

Ok, workaround worked once. Every next run - no enter, no matter how many times I tab.
This is really weird.

Me too. If you press F3 it can view the contents... I'm not sure why the extfs won't work

Are you using the community SSU? or have you otherwise installed the patched Xterm? I believe it changed the definition of the Enter key. If you had trained it previously maybe it was looking for the old enter key instead of the new (fixed) one.

Could it be the "sudo gainroot" "app" I installed?

You can either edit the files in /opt/mc/libexec/mc/extfs.d/ changing /scratchbox/tools/ to /usr/ or create /scratchbox/tools and 'sudo ln -s /usr/bin/ .' inside it to get all the compression methods working.

Another workaround that seems to work everytime: CTRL+O twice to switch to the shell and back. You could also use CTRL+M for enter, but this is far less comfortable.

BTW, this enter problem seems to happen only on pre-CSSU phones, any idea what might be the reason?

When I get the latest update prompt for Midnight Commander the install fails on unavailable liblslang2. No libslang2 on the repos.
