I'd like a SIM card slot.

Along with the ability to do HPDSDA/3G broadband.

Don't care if it can make normal mobile phone calls, I'm happy to do VOIP and select wireless when I have it and HPDSA/3G when I don't.

Right now to do that I need a powered hub to run a USB dongle from (and mess about a lot). To have a slot for a data SIM would be great.

And if it's "just" a modem whatsit like the Huawei USB sticks just built in, then Nokia don't need to do all that tedious testing and regulatory gubbins.

I'd assume people who would want a SIM card slot actually want a SIM card slot, but without all the drawbacks that come with it.

Why the N78?
(I assume you said N78 to say buy a phone that can act as a modem, but if the N78 has something special, I'd like to know)

Using my phone as a modem is out of the ToS of my provider, it works, it's free, but it's forbidden in the ToS.
A SIM card slot in the NIT would just bring me back into the legal way.

And it looks like I'm not the only one:

GA, you CAN run native code!

http://groups.google.com/group/andro...68334a74a9bab2

You copy over the binary using adb (to the android filesystem), and can run it using the built in shell (using adb) or a java written console.

But ultimately you're right, we can't compare the two platforms. Yet. I have a feeling that they will compete more than you think. My question was: Would you buy an Android phone or the "N900"? I LOVE the tablets, use mine every day (nearly), but I think I would grab Android...

Sure, A sim card would be nice. You are right about the N78: I just wanted to emphasize the differences between a phone and a NIT.

I use my NIT at home, in the office, in general in places where WiFi is available (BOINGO is great). I can connect to the internet via my phone (excellent fast connection from KPN) but hardly use it.

Using the NIT means sitting, reading, writing, surfing, listening etc. When I do that WiFi is somehwere around. So I do not really need a cellular network or WIMAX. (....Most of the time I do not browse in the wilderness. .)

But, of course, cellular networks (or WIMAX ) have much more coverage outside the urbanised world. Therefore I do understand the requirement to use these networks.

I guess the NITs are optimized for WiFI usage. I know there are phones with WiFI, but I haven't seen phones connecting so easily to WIFI as a NIT!

What I do not want is another Iphone: combined functionality = more complexity = more compromises ! That's why there are so many complaints about the Iphone. At some moment in the future there will be a Smart Iphone with GPS, WifI, a good browser etc.

I understand the SMART company (tin cars ...) is now talking with APPLE to create a flying SMART automobile () with GPS, interactive windows with built-in browser(s) and live music.
Until then: I'll go for 1 NIT, 1 mobile phone and 1 TomTom.

I understand Nokia will launch it's Tube (5800 ?) this year. I expect much more quality, and a good browser. Let's wait and see.
Abel .

It would only be appropriate to have different versions then: a model with 3G/WiMax and a model without those wireless options. If you decide to have 3G later on the base config, you can use a 3G dongle. Some people (like myself), are not interested in monthly plans to have internet everywhere they go. I know I don't want to have to pay extra for the 3G/WiMax config when I know I won't use it.

Plus I wouldn't like it if it had phone capabilities either. I have a good phone thats works fine and I wouldn't mind if I would accidentally drop it. I may be sweaty, wet, dirty, etc. when having to talk on my cell, but do you think I would answer the tablet if i was under those conditions? No...

I just saw video where a small group of people were talking about UMPCs and MIDs. A few said that they would want the devices to be used as a phone while others said they would rather have a cheap, basic phone with bluetooth and have their all-in-one device separate.

Kinda like how some want a keyboard... and some don't.

Well, I should hope not, but I guess thread-induced amnesia is always a danger to be reckoned with.
