Hey, I just saved you a lot of typing AND a bunch of money there... now you owe me a beer or two at the next summit ! :-)

There appears to be something wrong with my in-forum editor: I can't select colours anymore (nor did I add colour to that particular bit).

Does anyone else only see a small white square when clicking the colour selector?

I remember that! Oh, how I drooled...

No, I see a small black square.

But , , and the like still work...

Seriously, wouldn't it be fun, a Kaypro with everything chopped about 6" behind the display, a slot-loading optical with a 5.25" floppy facade, and batteries for a 48-hour runtime? (And those lovely individual-switch keyboards. You know you could mod those, take keys off an old one, nibble out more room, and get extra keys... Not like the Pandora. Gaming controls, in the limited sense of an inverted-T cursor pad, were thus attainable.)

Really, the only problem with this is destroying a perfectly good Kaypro to build it.
Might I perhaps interest you in a working, mint-condition Compaq Portable III sewing-machine (with full-size ISA card extension)... or maybe a Toshiba T5100 ? :-)

Not that those are bad machines, but...
 1. They don't have big metal keyboards (and cases).
 2. They actually run modern OSes without putting in a new computer.
 3. They aren't machines I grew up on.
If I had them, they'd wind up being terminals or thin-clients. The Kaypros' the only thing I'd actually mod into something cool and useful. (A more likely outcome would actually be an x86 gaming-ready machine, rather than a Pandora...)

That said, if you're ever thinking of tossing them, I might be game to at least cover shipping costs to get them here; while I love old machines, I am aware of the uselessness of most of them, and too tight a budget to collect them regardless, so you can probably get more on ebay.

Oh no, I didn't extract them from their respective garbage cans just to dump them again for a few bucks. Right now they're gracing my garage racks waiting for my time and inspiration to mod them into something fun (probably when I retire :-). Like I did with the old Hirschmann Ethernet hub...

OK, we're seriously OT, but that's beautiful. A shame about the lights, though; revisit that after you get done with the Compaq and Toshiba!

Thanks (*blush*).

I do have the hardware provisioned for generation III actually : a newer VIA ITX board and a 80 GB 2"5 drive. And a new OS (Arch Linux), 'cause I'm fed up with Gentoo. All currently being prototyped inside a MSDN plastic binder case, waiting for me to muster the courage for the big switch (and downtime :-)

Hey, OT is what I do best! Here's my server / router housing:

This is an old picture; I've replaced the old monitor with a 19" CRT that looks almost the same. The button / joystick console swings down and inside I have a keyboard, mouse, and some actual joysticks that I plan to rig up to the old controls at some point in the future...

I'm actually trying to figure out how to use my antique phone with my N800 to make a cool video-VoIP phone.
