it sounds like MenoRikey is equating the word "Internet" with the web browser. In reality web browsing is only a subset of the total internet experience that was mentioned earlier. Don't forget about media, e-mail, instant messaging, VOIP, etc. These are also part of the "Internet."

I think that Nokia packaged up all of these internet experiences in a device that is unique and (overall) works well. Sure it's not perfect, but I've never had a device that was.

To find out if you have the latest, go to start (or whatever it's called) Settings -> Control Panel and double click "About Product. If the Version shown is 5.2008.43-7, then you have the latest.

I do agree that the web seems slow, and the lack of ability to touch scroll while loading elements makes it seem even slower. However, it seems that the main cause is that websites are getting more and more bloated. That's something Nokia can't keep pace with, even as each version of the browser and OS gets faster. My desktop system with a 2700+ Athlon XP is beginning to show it's age even when just browsing the internet because of site bloat. I have to run FlashBlock to keep sites in check. Very annoying no matter the cause, but the Nokia tablets are pretty much the only devices in this size and price range.

Yep, that's the version I have.

Well, I'm not going to give up on it yet, I did only get it for $200 off ebay.

I thought I read in a thread somewhere there are some about:config tweaks you can do to the browser. Are there any alternative browsers that are better?

To improve browsing I use a modified Hosts file (search the site for more details) and this cuts out the majority of ads from the webpages.

I also have too bookmarks define which switch too and from 'iPhone' mode which tells sites such as google that you want Apple's version of the 'Full Internet', and I have a greasemonkey add-in which resizes the google pages to the wider screen size.

I must admit, that I'm looking forward to a bigger screened device sometime in 2009, running a more standard implementation of Linux or XP... But my N800 is much easier to carry around.

You can try Tear.. or setup Easy Debian and try Midori or kazehakase... both are lightweight browsers.. but run under Debian, not OS2008. With easy Debian though you barely notice the difference. Then of course, you can run the full Ice weasel (firefox), but if you think the current browser is slow you'll be cursing full Firefox on this thing.

There's also a webkit running around here for the default maemo browser that I haven't tried yet... search for webkit.

there absolutely is ad blocking technology available. one of the best ways of doing so is by modifying the hosts file (search this forum for hosts)
you can also also add greasemonkey and modify browser that way

1st of all, sorry you haven't had a pleasent experience so far. secondly... has anyone asked what windows were open or what connection was used? i have pidgin, rss reader, gmail, and itt forums open... and i can load either of my windows in about 10 seconds, sometimes far less. i can open an email one gmail is already up, in about 3 seconds. i have zero ad ons, pop-up blockers or whatever installed and have not increased my cache. admittedly, youtube is a little laggy but browsing search results is a breeze. The videos just take alitte longer. i find that if you zoom out and dont scroll around maniacly, they load about as fast as my desktop... fb chat can be a little sketchy but there are programs for it, and youtube. the scroll bar and interface part just take getting used to... if someone wasnt complaining about the scrollbar, they'd be complaining that it took up to much space. nokia made everything smaler so we could have more room for content. i just keep 2-3 windows open and it loads fine- i dont mean this next part in a mean way, but did you look at the specs before buying it? btw those 10 second or so speeds are with less than a 50% connection... it seems like lighting compared to the psp :P

Is a Scion XA not a car because a Ferrari is faster? We're dealing with subjectivity. I can go into Starbucks for coffee without having to haul a computer bag and still take my N810 from my pocket and benefit from the capabilities of the Internet. I don't have to sit next the one wall outlet available there so I can finish my email. It's all a matter of personal preferences and priorities. For many of us the tablet does just fine and puts a smile on our faces.

Seems that the OP is expecting desktop level browsing from the N810. I'll keep it short, you probably won't ever be happy with the speed of the browser. Unless you start to use the other features such as SKYPE, VOIP, internet radio, IM etc I would sell the device and save yourself the headache of endless tweaking for minimal speed gain. There are other portable internet devices out there that are bigger and more expensive but will give you a better browsing experience.
