Great! Thanks for the information!

I still think it's completely unnecessary and dumb (and very possibly harmful, as I have claimed) to dismantle this successful site and replace it with one as planned, but it's nice to know that Reggie will be running it.

Moderators to control spam -- that's great, but not very interesting, since it is obviously a good idea worth five seconds' thought.
I wouldn't exactly say this site is being "dismantled"; the site is moving to a different URL and probably getting a new theme...

(Some Fremantling.)
Haha, I guess I was a minute late!

It's posts like these that make me miss the "thanks"-button in off-topic.

The new tablet:
  • Free as in beer? No way!
  • Free as in speech? Mostly...
  • Free as in mantle? Absolutely!

The discussion looks like anything but off-topic, hence moving it to a most appropiate location.

It's like Windows XP and then Vista. People are going to show up for the old operating system and told to go to the new operating system. They are then going to decide whether they LIKE the new operating system. Some will decide not to move on or to go elsewhere. This does not necessarily benefit the company or community making the change.

Yes, it's exactly like XP & now Vista; if by "like" we assume we have an implicit "in no way ..." prefix.

The only thing being "told" to go elsewhere is HTTP/1.1-compliant user agents following a 301 "Moved Permanently" redirect.

Most users probably won't notice the change in URL, or site name, and instead just notice a new theme. This theme will be consistent with the rest of maemo.org (which can be seen under development at http://newstyle.maemo.org/ and the design discussions on -community).

Will the change add the user's maemo.org karma points?

Define "add"? There're no immediate plans for account merging, and users with maemo.org accounts can earn karma for posts & thanks here by putting the URL of their ITT profile in their maemo.org profile.

Ultimately, account merging makes sense, but there're some practical difficulties.

Or are you talking about displaying a user's karma in their post header? There was no conclusion on having consistency with the designed maemo.org user profile, but is it something to have any concerns about?

Too bad. I thought account merging was the whole point of the procedure...? You'd register for the forum and then use this username/password to vote for a council or rate an application in the downloads section, all without opening yet another maemo account. It would have made everything there is on maemo.org so much more inviting.

(And I'd have hoped I could finally get rid of my two nicks and merge them to one... So I'll have to wait for that.)
