Actually, this is a major reason I haven't bothered re-installing it since its first release. (It's also stupid on their part, like they think that the march of time in software development wouldn't protect them anyway if they later wanted to release a version for which they charged?)

"Make a SD slot 1, copy Pocket tunes to slot 1/launch, I suspect that will make it work."
Can anyone explain this really slowly and carefully for someone who is not very knowledgable but is capable of following basic directions? I don't know about command lines etc and am hoping that I can get apps to work from the card ie database apps etc(listpro, handyshopper, etc). Is this possible for the general tablet user?

Ok, you will need xterm (EDIT: That's the "Terminal" application) for this. The command line is inavoidable.

In xterm, enter the following commands. It should work as cut&paste. It assumes you have a card in the (external) slot, and that you have room there for pocket tunes.
Code:
mkdir ~/.gvm/cards
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/0
mkdir /media/mmc1/PALM
mkdir /media/mmc1/PALM/Launcher
Now you need to get hold of the pocket tunes application - I'm not familiar with it so I don't know what it's named, but let's say it's called pockettunes.prc
Copy that file into /media/mmc1/PALM/Launcher/
You could remove the card from the tablet and use a PC, then the file would go into PALM/Launcher/
on the card.

Now launch Garnet VM on the tablet. Start any of the built-in applications, e.g. Date Book. The point is only to get to see the Palm OS window. Click the little home icon in the lower left corner of the Palm OS window. When you see the 'home' window click the upper right Category menu (it'll probably show 'All' or something). You should see 'slot 1' there. If you click it you will see all the applications (.prc files) currently installed in that Launcher/ directory described above, i.e. hopefully pocket tunes, if you managed to find the .prc file and copy it there.

edit: BTW, if you have a card that's been used on an actual Palm device, with applications already installed to the card, then that card should work straight away using the setup above -- it will already have a PALM/Launcher directory tree in the root of the card.

Is installing, setup and using Palm OS apps from another device a complicated process for a newbie?

I just got my n810 yesterday and have absolutely NO experience with Linux but a lot of experience with Palm OS as I want to move several of my Sony Ckie apps from it to the n810.

Is this something that I should be able to follow the directions and do or is there a bunch of this code line editing to get it to work?

thanks...

@coosbaytv

Apart from forcing cards to work - nothing. Everything else can be done from window ui.

@TaA-t3

Last two lines can be done in one:
Code:
mkdir -p /media/mmc1/PALM/Launcher

v vaz:

Thanks but this is already over my head...

What do you mean by this:

"Everything else can be done from window ui."

Are you talking about the interface "window" of the n810 itself?

Hmmm the scary xterm is mentioned again. Honestly, I have looked, but must not be searching correctly. Could someone please tell me where I find xterm to put on my tablet.I know we have x Terminal in our utilities, but I need more, don't I? I think that because of the $ in front of the xTerminal line. As you can see, I am not a coder, but would like to put my memory card to better use with my palm apps.

Hey, Nitesky, have not seen you for quite awhile, glad to see you back!

I think I do know a little bit about how to do it, just post question when problems.
xterm is x Terminal. Just click it, it will open up your command line window. Type exactly as TA-t3 put it in the above thread, or even better, cut and paste directly from web browser of your tablet, this avoids typo. You only need the 1st 2 line to make slot1. You need all 4 lines to make the PALM/Launcher directory, I use emelfm2, a graphic UI filemanager. Then copy whatever apps you want to run to PALM/Launcher, Keep post back if problems.

Thanks again Bunanson. As always you have given me just the answer that I need. And as always I hesitate to mess with my N800. But I will give it a go and see what happens! Please stay tuned.
