Now that the new Dell Android phone has been announced, I am concerned that Maemo won't reach critical mass fast enough.

Yeah. I know a lot of those who write and/or support open source software in their free time, just for the heck of it. Or just to give something back because they can build on a software which is already there.

Okay, there are also quite a few which get paid by their employers to develop open source software, in some projects those make the majority - especially in the large projects.
