Are you really, honestly saying that the most pro-consumer easy-to-remember name for this kind of device would be something like "n900"?

You think that's the best that can be done?

Look at the most successful phone model brands of recent times, especially in the US market which Maemo is supposed to crack:

RAZR

iPhone

Android

Blackberry

Pre

Sidekick

etc...

...notice any numbers in there?

I agree that Nokia is itself a powerful brand, but the problem is that it's a powerful brand across the entire range of phones including lower end devices.

And Apple, Moto, Palm etc are also famous brands but they still felt it was worth giving a particular model or a particular range its own name.

How can we make consumers realise that the N900 is something special? By giving it its own brand, just like all the devices I listed above.

in my experience, yes.
feel free to disagree

your example with the names is nice and all, but there are many other examples where a product has been successful without a flashy name.

and it's not about me being a geek, either. as i said before, all of my non-geek friends share my opinion.

I agree that a better name is easier to remember and will have more appeal.

I can still remember my first Nokia phones: the 6110, 6150, and 3210, and some of the newer ones like the E61, N95 and E71, but for some reason, I can't remember the ones in between. For those who never owned these phones, when I say '6110' you won't even know how it looks. However, when I say 'Treo', iPhone', or 'RAZR', even though each phone has several models, you automatically get an image of how the phone looks.

They should just call it the Nokia Noo.

Rymnes with "Sue".

It doesn't matter if it was an explorer, the "mainstream" would think of a car or a dog.

Good point.
I guess it's up to Nokia's marketing team to decide. The names seem more effective in certain markets though, otherwise there are pronounciation problems (anyone remember Jif to Cif, or Marathon to Snickers?).

There are actually supposed to be numbers for a few of them, but you've decided to omit them. RAZR V3, iPhone 3G, Blackberry 8800, etc...

Numbers seem to have worked well enough for Chanel - despite the market being aimed at women. Maybe that's another of Nokia's secrets: the n900 is aimed at the same market as Chanel no 5.
