More simple GUI than KM. I prefer KM's look and options, but I can not figure out why some vids do not play when using it. It is just a few though that I have tried (out of ten, so 20% rate).

I would think it is KM and it not linking to mplayer and using the default, but using KM plays videos that do NOT work on the default player.

Small tiny issues and not even release level apps yet, so no problem. I appreciate the people's efforts to have these apps to use

Does the mplayer native UI still work when it is launched by a GUI? If so, the "f" key toggles full screen. Left arrow backs up 10 seconds, right arrow goes forward 10s. Up arrow forward 1 minute, down arrow back 1m.

Just tested it, only left and right arrow seem to be working.

One thing I noticed that if you play a file and after that you try to open another file (either by after pausing or stopping the original file) the player does not work. It does not open another file. You have to exit the player and launch it again to play the second file.

Anybody else has similar experience ?

I installed Mplayer and it has played almost everything I have tried. I am now up to 95% and close to the same sweet level as the Archos 5

At best, the default player (even with the codecs added) plays 70% and some with ghosting, partial green screens and dropped frames. Not seeing these issues with Mplayer. Just great results

I hope that Mplayer gets released soon and adds:

1. UI
2. On screen controls
3. Fix- fast forward needed to make some avi and MP4 files to play.
4. Read video headers (some files that are numbered have the title in the header). Example is file viewer does not, but the media player on the N900 does read them.

MINOR quibbles for a GREAT playing media player that is not even released yet

Mplayer ROCKS!
I observed exactly the opposite. WorldTV99 has mplayer, ossomp (the built-in default media player) flash player, among the three, ossomp plays a lot smoother/well behaved then mplayer. You can select the same tv station and observe side by side. WorldTV99 info here.

bun

Great for you! I just know that the default player plays some very smooth, others with lower frame rates, choppy, not at all, green screen, ghosting, etc. 70% of the files played, but a third of the 70% had the issues noted here (other than not at all, of course) and almost all of them stutter for at least the first few seconds. Mplayer buffers before playing- the default player apparently does not, or not as well as Mplayer.

Mplayer plays everything I have tried smoothly. Only exception being some higher res wmv files that even the Archos 5 struggles with.

added:

Built in player would be the obvious choice to use since part of the framework, but needs to perform as good as Mplayer before I bother for offline vids. Hope we see an update for the default player, since the N900 proves to play a lot of vids very well.

Gonna bump this, rather than making a new thread.

I'm trying to play some 1280x720 h.264 videos with Mplayer and SiB, however when I try to actually play a video nothing ever appears, and I get a constant spam on the console:

VDec: sing Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
Movie-Aspecct is 1.78:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO: [xv] 1280x720 => 1280x720 Planar YV12 [fs]
VDec: vo config request - 1280 x 720 (preferred colorspace: Planar YV12)

and get no audio or video. When I play a smaller, simpler video (DivX 5 in AVI @ 640x480), it gets approximately 2 seconds in then the playback output stops cold. The system is still running, but console output and video quit.

Apparently smooth video playback is possible on this thing is possible with mplayer. If anyone knows how to get video at least playing, to start, that'd be helpful.

I don't see what's so bad about the N900 default media player.... It just needs a couple tweaks.. like Portrait mode (easy to navigate), Basic Equaliser (like the S60 maybe), Support for changing the song's information (again like the S60).. Everything else is great.

No need for that anymore (i think).
The new download in "multimedia" gives more support to audio-video codec. Now, all my videos (tested so far) works (when it wasn't previously)!
