I too am another who has recieved a lemon direct from Nokia usa's store. I have the same very poor sound quality using handset or speakerphone with phone calls. 'Very surprised, as my old N95 emits much more decent sound for phone calls - could it be my carrier At&T, and should I switch to T-Moble for optimal sound quality?

It sounds pretty clearly like a hardware fault, at least in your case.
For other people who don't have as clear a set of behaviours as you see, two quick tests spring to mind:
- Do you experience the volume fade problem when using the headphones that shipped with the device?
- Do you experience the fade problem when using it on speakerphone?
