Thank-you everyone for your help.
For some strange reason the vodafone internet connection is now working!
I'm trying the connection here in East "The land of the free and the in-bred" Lothian and it seems to be working fine.
Maybe it is something local to the Edinburgh area.
Will try again tomorrow.

Hi everybody,
I am not able to connect to the internet through GPRS, I live in India,
Got the n900 from US, went to vodafone and got the internet flat rate.
But when i try to connect, I always get the message "Internet connection failed"
I can see that its a common problem and that some of you have managed to actually get it working. Does anybody has the proper configuaration for karnataka,India?
Vodafone customer service says that "they dont support the phone"
Can anyone help me here?

Use the following and it will work.
Access Point: portalnmms
No passwork or UserName
Advanced: Use Proxy

Hey guys im in Australia and having trouble with APN's because of trying to get fMMS, the internet worked originally straight out the box going through what im pretty sure was
Connection name: VF Internet AU
Connection type: Packet data
Access point name: vfinternet.au
username: blank
password: blank
http proxy: 10.202.2.60
port: 8080
but this doesnt seem to work anymore when i manually re-add it through fAPN....
any suggestions guys? anyone have the orginal vodafone AU settings?
i created a new APN ...MMS for fMMS with live.vodafone.com which the internet works through but my understanding is its slower than vfinternet.au??

I ran the script /opt/fmms/fmms_config.py which didnt fix it.
I then uninstalled fMMS but now VF AU Internet APN no longer works so dont know what fMMS or possibly the script did.
Anyway after some fiddling and googling, I found that turning off the proxy seems to work for normal Vodafone Australia Internet:
Connection name: VF Internet AU
Connection type: Packet data
Access point name: vfinternet.au
username: blank
password: blank
http proxy: None
port: None
