So is there a bug filed for the bit where the n900 locks the pop3 account? My version: 10.2010.19-1.203.1

I'm getting the an error message on the desktop about my pop3 account being locked/in-use (im using Evolution on Ubuntu 10.04) ?

It's odd because this never used to happen on my E71

cheers

don't really use pop3 but im *pretty* sure pop3 does only allow 1 access at a time, ie 2 or more devices cant connect simultaneously.

if its only email ur using, why not use IMAP, or speak to your admin and setup IMAPS on a secure port with a certificate, that allows your PC, phone, laptop etc etc all to connect simultaneously.

I don't disagree with the fact that only 1 connection can be active *at any 1 time*, but i've never had this problem before (like i said with my E71).

Now i've just come across this: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5836

This is EXACTLY the symptom i'm experiencing. Could it be that this bug has been re-introduced ??

"netstat -at" shows a pop3 port with TCP ESTABLISHED

I do have poll every 15 minutes turned on, but it should drop the connection to the pop3 account right? It's a batch pull operation.
Could it be some apps or widgets in the background which basically keep the pop3 connection alive ??

hmm....

not sure mate

I stopped using my N900 because of the lack of real sync options

my best suggestion would be to use IMAP

who is your email hosted with ???

i do know if a pop connection is not closed cleanly (ie with the quit command) , it can take the server side 15+ minutes to terminate the session, which would throw up errors if any other client tried to connect in the meantime.

(edited my last post seconds ago!)

Provider is GMX. I can confirm that when i turn the n900 off, im able to use my desktop pop3 without issue. I'm going to re-open the bug or comment at least.

Hi mate

reading this

http://gmx.com/email-to-cell-phone.h...67C5.www-eu019

they DO support IMAP which at least will sync your emails, whilst not a proper sync solution, it will at least solve your multiple access problem, and give you the bonus of syncing emails. They may even support IMAP IDLE which is a sort of push email....i know the iphone supports this ...not sure about n900

but again.....IMAP is your answer.

in thinking you didnt have this prob with previous phone, what was the pop poll time...ie how often did your phone go and check for emails ??? ie every 30 min for example ???

The poll was 15 minutes both on desktop and E71 and n900.

Yes i have tried IMAP on the N900 a few hours before i started this thread. And again i think there was some (im going to bite the bullet) bug.

With IMAP what i was frequently seeing was a blank INBOX. Yes Blank.
It's almost random. I wouldn't get any mails listed until i physically hit "Send/Receive" sometimes. Is that one a known issue? Perhaps i'll start a different thread on that problem.

The reason why i don't like IMAP is because i don't like the thought of a live master list of emails. Once, I managed to wipe out my entire box of 100s of emails. with POP i get at least a 'copy' of mails locally which i do like.

Thanks very much, it's great to see that this community does care. N900 is the best in its class for sure.

*** ok Lets work through this.............

"The reason why i don't like IMAP is because i don't like the thought of a live master list of emails. Once, I managed to wipe out my entire box of 100s of emails. with POP i get at least a 'copy' of mails locally which i do like."

The simple solution is set your Desktop PC up with POP access (and a good backup plan, so docs/emails etc etc are all backed up...I can help you with this if you need help---seperate topic)

then set up laptops/phones use to IMAP

When you say "live master list of emails" there is really no such thing.

Most email clients (outlook express/outlook/thunderbird/evolution etc etc store a copy (cache) off *ALL* emails recieved so it is actually very difficult to *loose* emails

What you seem to be doing is basically "leave a copy on server" for n days....

"Once, I managed to wipe out my entire box of 100s of emails"

This is where a good backup plan comes into force.

BTW how exactly did you delete hundreds of email s, what did you do ?

PPS What operating system do you use and what eamil client do you ise on that ?
