Cellular Modem Control Buttons v0.5.1-1 is in -devel, including bg_BG translations. I hope the UTF-8 support worked and all strings are showing fine.

Yes, everything seems fine. One suggestion though - why don't you use the "Table mode"/"Phone mode" as msgids - that way when a user is using a laguage that is still not added to your package (like it was in my case) - at least he/she will see the normal non translated english strings.

And at last one more idea - can't we start localizing the pretty package name? described in Maemo-Display-Name :-)

I asked about that and it is a bug: The translations should automatically fallback to en_GB when translation is not available for that string.

Please vote for the bug to get it fixed.

I've also asked opinions about that, and I'm not sure if its a good thing or not. The short description showing with the package name is always visible in localized language anyways, so it should be clear what the package does even if the name is in english.

Todor, since I can't reply to your e-mail (your address "doesn't exist"), find my reply here:

Hiya Todor,

It doesn't support localization but as I've been asked to reduce the
gap between the button and the brightness slider, I'm working on an
update anyway so I'd be happy to add localization support to it.

But I've only ever used GNU gettext to steal other programs' strings
so you'll have to wait as I learn how to properly integrate it into
Simple Brightness Applet (including Autotools integration etc.),
request a Garage project and get an account on Transifex.

Thanks!

Best Regards,
Faheem

Hi, Tuomo,
I've read the pros and cons about the localization of the package name itself and indeed I must agree that there is not point to localize an app with specific name - may be I was tempted to propose that because of your specific package name which is more like a very short description.

I was thinking today (after receiving your request for localization of the descriptions) for a more generic solution that will allow all translators to add localizations to all free packages in the repos, and on the other hand an easy way for the developers to just grab them and push them in the packages.

I'm really sorry for the typo - I've already fixed it in my modest account

I also do not have experience in developing with gettext, but was thinking of writing up some wiki page about gettext integration that would take away the fear of developers from using it :-) Do want to help with tips when you are ready?

UPDATE 2010-03-07
Finally, the package with full Bulgarian localization today has appeared in the extras devel repository with version number - 20100307-r1044. Between the last update and today I was able to push some more polishes in various spots - so I hope that things now look good enough and at least the rough edges are polished. Enjoy.
Meanwhile I've started comunication with different developers asking to localize their apps and in the coming days I'll post some screenshots on the things I'm working on right now. Currently the apps I was working on and are already officially localized are:
  • Flashlight
  • Cellular Modem Control Buttons

Hi,
I want to give you an update of what I was doing lately.
First of all - the really *big* bug that was related with the Bulgarian localization is finally resolved And the bigger news is that the fix will be included in the upcoming PR1.2! This probably will allow us to promote the localization package to extras-testing.

Also some modifications regarding the localization in Maemo were pushed in the Catorise application. For more information - go here. This is a great app - if you are not using it - please, give it a try.

The app does not need to be localized! It uses the names from the App Manager which are already localized (as you can see from the screenshots on my blog). That the reason I love this app
