Can someone give me a step by step on how to install this?
I am a complete Linux noob so forgive me. I've only ever used X-terminal once.

Do I need to download the *.deb file to my device first?

Put the .deb file in your Documents folder and
Try this
sudo gainroot
dpkg -i MyDocs/.documents/mafw-gst-eq-renderer_0.1.2009.47-1-1mgr_armel.deb
apt-get -f install
apt-get remove mafw-gst-renderer

reboot

Just to let everyone know that if the equalizer does not seem to change the sound, and you have the following packages installed

-Subtitles Package
-Extra Decoders Package

Just uninstall and re-install them, and the equalizer will start to do its thing

I noticed that it uses a lot more CPU. About 50% is used by mafw-dbus-wrapp by itself!!

It makes my N900 slow enough that music will cut out when I scroll through the songs, adding songs to the play lists etc. It will also obviously use quite a lot more of battery. I expect about 5 times more than before. I actually didn't notice this when I first installed it but I do now.

Let me know if yours do the same thing or if I just need to reinstall. =P

Yes, the CPU is quite busy with this installed. Playing some ogg files, mine is running at about 75%. But, the sound improvement is great! (Especially when sending the sound to my car stereo. )
