While I agree with you on all other points.

No Nokia is not selling the phone that way. Here in the UK they are selling the divice via operators as a phone. They sure as hell are not making a point of limiting this assumption.

It looks like a phone is sold from phone shops and sold as an NSeries on their website with little indication that you should not expect a phone when you buy it.

That said it being sold as a phone in no way makes it require all these features that people claim. Some peoples idea of its minimum expectaion simply come from up their arse.

Propoganda is a strong word. If people rly on the opinion and postings of non-manufacturers then should be careful to backup the findings themselves. This works for all products not just mobile devices. If you were making another point then I'm afraid I misunderstood.

Actually if you look at the device as a whole then I would struggle to believe that the functioanliy is a main issue. I agree that there are a number of people that would like the functionality but as a proportion of the user base of the devce? Of those that are interested in it how many of them find that it makes the device less usable than say the lack of USSD (used for a lot of prep-pay customers).

When developing and maintaining a device, especially when you have limited resources, priorities have to go to certain streams. I believe that I said the priority here is usually to have a stable device that has core functionality first. Whilst portrait text entry is a useful feature for a number of users it is not core to the device as a whole. It is still possible to send SMS using the hardware keyboard so the functionality is there, just not as convenient as some users would like. The inclusion of a hardware keyboard is there as this is the expected primary input for textual information.

People that want a specific feature are likely to be vocal about it. How many people have posted and how many have remained silent? I don't believe that I stated this was a minorty need either, I simple stated that I didn't think it was high up on the list of things to do.

Thanks for that - it takes a big person to come out with something like that!

I can understand your frustration but please, the guy wants portrait and that's fine, don't send him to a fruitphone - has he really been that bad?

Have you see that the N810 is billed as a 'phone' in categories too - can you imagine the disappointment there too? They do seem to have missed the point on their website a tad!

However, it makes telephone calls so technically I suppose you could say 'job done'. However it does claim GSM functionality and a few items off the required list for that are not quite there yet such as USSD which is why I would think that is getting their attention first.

in uk n900 is marketed as a phone from network operators and even nokia retail stores.

i know what this device is and what can do but end of the day if it was not a "phone like" device then me and 70 percent of the people here would not have n900(out of all n900 users, my opinion)

i dont mind it in landscape but there few things which makes sense to have option like, phone app, web browser (why have nokia decided this app should have ?) conversations app (for sms) , contact app (not just from phone app) and maps app.

these apps should have the option. some people care some dont, i can live with wat i have does not mean i will not use other option.

before some post crap about portrait mode i'm not saying the whole ui just those apps which would make one hand operations easier , just like phone and web browser app...

Most of te Nokia branded stores in the UK are actually not run by Nokia (yeah, so helpful eh?). I believe that only the Flagship store in London and possibly the one in Heathrow airport are currently run by Nokia and they are being pulled back from too if posts are t be believed. I think you'll find the rest are run by Mobile Phones Direct.

The web browser does do portrait since PR 1.1 and is more actively supported in PR 1.2. (Ctrl-Shift-O whilst in browser to enable).

To develop an application in portrait and landscape (The N900 is landscape by default due to the keyboard location) requires a lot more work. The consideration of GUI and other functionality has to be considered and then the programme has to be written or amended too.

Once again I think that a lot of this was mentioned in the post I made regarding priority and use of resources. The N900 was always envisage by Nokia as primarily a landscape device. If the device functions (allbeit not to everyone's preference) then they concentrate their limited (and it is!) resources on fixing issues with the existing systems that cause instability and limit the devices ability to function prior to improving the device with additional usage patterns.

Actually the E75 or E72 are also good options.

Actually, my solution for the lack of a perfect device was....getting more than one .

Took a while to save up for all, but eventually. I ended up with E75 = Solid Phone, N900 = Internet, Emulators, Screwing around with linux and finally and iPod Touch = Apps, Music.

No space for my keys anymore......
