DOH!!!!!
on reading up further on it.... the issue here is the camera.
The 40D and higher end canons don't use infrared for remotes.
They use a different stupid wireless technology

I cannot seem to get this to work with my Canon 450D-
Unfortunately QTIrecco fails to install, saying it requires lib packages which are not yet available. Perhaps this is my error but it means I cannot find a suitable remote code for the 450D.
Please could I therefore request a code for 450D as this is potentially for me a very useful application.
Would be good to emulate the two second delay function I have on my current Canon remote as well if possible?

Works on a 400D for me but couple of things... one, the range is tiny..so make sure you are close to the camera. Second thing was that I had to put the camera in timer more for it to work. Not sure if that is the case with your camera as well.

(I might need to improve these messages in another release :-)
Whoever has problems with Canon cams and is using the version from Extras: please try the newer release in Extras-Devel or -Test, there might be an improvement.

I stumbled on this by accident. This is a neat toy! Although it doesn't quite work out-of-the-box for me.
To get rid of the 'error 1' failure message, I had to modify shutter.py to call the irsend command with sudo. This is a fresh install of shutter + lirc, and I even followed the reboots the software suggested.
