Teamwork is the essence. But both Yahoo and Nokia are really not doing well. Is this a desperate last stand of the two desperate corporatations? Time will tell...

Against Google Yahoo does not stand a chance. Basically the algorithm of Google is extensively better than Yahoos (or at least used to be).

But the epic battle did not end there...

Here Yahoo wins (surprise)

Nonsense is the essence here...

This makes sense to me, but I'm a bit annoyed about the IM solution. Does this mean Ovi Chat won't be Jabber anymore? That sucks. On the other hand, it was useless to me because all my friends were on MSN or Facebook chat , so not a huge loss in that sense. (But I was hoping it would become popular.)

It also raises a big question: since Nokia didn't do this two years ago, what were they hoping to accomplish by making their own email service instead of outsourcing the backend in the first place? Has some big part of their strategy failed or did they realize replicating things in house was stupid?

Maybe they underestimated costs of scaling up the service. Ovi Mail has now 9 million users and it's growing fast.

Yes yahoo is evil! Go and install yahoo messenger and type something in the address bar in firefox and voila your search engine is changed to yahoo. Then there is no way to remove that until you go to the about:config settings. And this happens even if you uncheck everything during installation.

I hated yahoo for doing that.

Random bits:

- I think this underlines Nokia's global reach (and the general US-centric perspective on the web) that Yahoo is such an inferior product, while it has quite a large worldwide userbase.

-I think Nokia can eat into Blackberry's territory with this partnership, especially for the non-business segment that are tied to the blackberry messenger ecosystem for social purposes.

+1

I couldn't care less about this Yahoo/Nokia thing... As long as they don't make existing services worse. Killing XMPP-based Ovi Chat in favour of a proprietary protocol would of course make things worse. (I didn't even know Yahoo still has a chat service... Things you learn on t.m.o.)
