P.S.
IT WORKS!

Just a spurious thought, the GPSrecorder app is complete now,
but this app should have BEARING integrated in with the SPEED display
but the problem is that BEARING is a subjective measurement that requires
averaging over samples that differ from application to application.
A two-sample bearing might be adequate for some uses
but for most people it might require sampling across all samples
or some time-based quantity of samples.
This makes the idea rather complicated and for this reason
I decline to make it as a feature request but simply as a point of consideration.

Cheers

There's always something to fix or improve

Actually, I ended up with the same conclusion when I started to write gpsrecorder with this compass-heading-bearing thing

I have exactly the same problem with an another feature request.
Both features deserve to be considered but I don't know how to simplify them. Particularly because of the number of settings they would imply.

Edit : I realize I was not clear enough on bearing.
I consider this BEARING feature to be 2 features actually.
One for runtime information, the other to perform statistical computation on the resulting track. The first is easy to implement, there is no reason not to do it, but the second involves a much complicated filtering mechanism while exporting raw data (the 'convert' mechanism) : this is where I ended up with the same conclusion as yours...

Ah... Not sure but I guess you have not upgraded your firmware to PR 1.3 ?

I also guess this is because the auto-builder on maemo.org (the bot responsible of compiling and building .deb package from source code) has recently been upgraded to support PR 1.3...

Anyone to confirm ?

I can confirm you that I did not update the PR to 1.3 because Im afraid to fall in worser troubles....
In fact, I tried but:
1 app manger failed because it said to use nokia pc suite.
2 pc suite said I had tu use ovi suite
3 ovi suite said I had nothing to update....
This was a f...g situation I did not resolve.
You think I need to reflash from a file deb?
I'm quite tired to personalize my mini pc anytime I have to reflash...
Good day.

I'm afraid I can't help you much there, your problem is not related to gpsrecorder... But maybe this wiki page can help you more ?

The secondary 'track bearing' feature sounds gnarly at best.
Most of the tracks I get involved with resemble worms
and calculating a bearing over a full or even partial track
would be virtually useless.
Instantaneous bearing is probably the way I should have put it.
This still needs some sort of filter (user selectable) maybe between 1 and 10 seconds?

Real life example:
I go with our heli to remote sites from time to time.
Enroute, his Garmin gives the pilot a steady bearing.
When we arrive we try to orient the nose of the aircraft
towards one of our field camps to take a radio signal check
(while in a hover at treetop level !)
The pilots get rather exasperated that their nice gps unit could not
give a stable fix on where he was pointed.
I try to explain that the gps Bearing feature requires a stable
non-zero velocity,
but they are usually rather busy trying to dodge treetops
with the tailrotor to argue about how gps works.

Anyway, with a GPS bearing output it might be possible to
cook up a compass function using the accelerometers
yielding a static bearing (which would admittedly degrade with time)
but would be useful in situations such as the example.

They complexity of adding a bearing and the next-level utility
of having a compass using accelerometer readings
put this idea out of the ballpark for GPS recorder,
the code of which might make a good basis for such a beast.

Just thinking out loud, anyway..

Which very likely means you need to remove some apps before you can update to Pr1.3

Check the threads about the PR1.3 update.
