Apple does not use Linux at all.
Mac OSX is BSD Unix.

Linux is a ground-up cleanroom implementation of the POSIX (UNIX) standard.

iOS is something else altogether and as far as I know, 100% closed source.

Different source code and different licensing... you will not see iOS running on anything, but Apple products.

Only real good thing about iphone is the apps, and since the majority need a capactive multi touch screen they would all need to be reconfigured for the resisitive non multi touch n900 screen. Even if you could get the iOS ported it wouldn't be as good as on the original iOS devices

I looked into this even though I have no skill. I turned several of my computers int hackintoshes. so I thought iOS might be possible.

Here are the problems I remember (it's been several months so this is bound to be off):
1. A whole lotta closed source.
2. Tightly controlled hardware. This is one of the big deals because apparently MacOSX uses kernel extensions to kind of load drivers, but since iOS is designed to run on just a handful of different components they were able to put it in the kernel without all the kexts. Or something. Hopefully you read my earlier disclaimer about not knowing much at all about the nuts and bolts.
3. ARM and Darwin. Apparently there are only a handul of people on the world who have the expertise to do this. Apparently they all work for Apple.

I think there were other reasons. As for the peope who ask, "Why downgrade your phone?" They are completely missing the point. Why climb a mountain? Because it's there.

Wow, I think after scrolling through this, I'm done with this forum. The N900 is overhyped and it's due to some of the people here, the same people who degrade iOS. Alright, so it can slowly run The Gimp and Open Office, burn through a battery in three hours if you use 3G web browsing for more than 14 minutes a day, month old OEM battery by the way, and graphically perform worse than a Blackberry. Quite a winner.

This thing use to be my dream phone, but the more I use it, the more I hate it, mainly for how good it could have been.

Comments like "Apple isn't linux". Stupid. I hate Apple and their overpriced, overrated products, but I wouldn't say something like that.

Maybe if a MeeGo 1.2+ port comes along, I'll come back to the N900, but I'm gonna ditch it for something else.

Back on point here, gotta love 60% of members who bash people asking for WP7, Symbian, iOS, Android, etc etc. Yeah, it really sucks having more OSes.
