Stellarium is still there in extras-devel, but this is about StellariuMobile, a dedicated mobile version. If you don't want to pay the 3 bucks, stick to the former!

I've just downloaded it vom Ovi Store and I like it. Compared to the extras-devel stellarium, which I had before, too, this now adds GPS functionality. One can also move the sky view by moving the phone! Moreover, information on sky objects are handled properly now (in stellarium, if you click on a star, you get the same information, but it doesn't go away again).

Btw, I noticed that when downloading there is a notice that this software is not by Nokia, in contrast to other ovi store apps.

EDIT: As a precaution, I had de-installed stellarium from extras-devel before installing stellarium-mobile, but now found the two don't conflict, so one can have both installed at the same time.

I also bought the program, and I'm very impressed! The program looks very professional and works great, totally worth the price.

People are always complaining that we have no apps in our app store, and when finally something decent is released people just pirate it instead of supporting the developer. If you want the free inferior version it's in extras-devel, or you buy this version. Either way it's a great deal.

It's not pirating if the app is licensed under the GPL (if my understanding of the GPL is correct).

The app is wonderful. I'm going to send some direct donations to this and orrery.

These two apps make my soul really happy.

PS1: kudos to Rob1n too for the port.
PS2: I dont mind nokia getting a euro if they gave him the prize money.

I want to point out to matan's credit that the About box of Stellarium mobile says its licensed under GPL, if so then IT IS COMPLETELY LEGAL to distribute the binary. In fact, IT IS ILLEGAL not to distribute the source upon request.

Someone should probably send a request to Ovi (or the developer, but I couldn't find the email) for the source and see what they respond with.

For anyone complaining against matan, we don't know who is getting the money, no was it in any way illegal for him to distribute the binary.

What I was missing at first, compared to non-mobile stellarium, is a finer zooming in and out. But I found out that one can also zoom like in the non-mobile version, through key shortcuts: Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down. (Without Ctrl, the cursor keys give an alternative method for moving around.)

Quite a number, though not all, of the key shortcuts of non-mobile stellarium are there (albeit undocumented):
  • C for constellation lines,
  • R for constellation art,
  • Z/E for aZimuthal/Equatorial grid,
  • N for nebula labels,
  • V for constellation labels,
  • P for planet labels,
  • A for atmosphere simulation,
  • G for ground,
  • . for equator line,
  • Space for centering on selected objects.

I don't think you tried very hard: the e-mail of the developer is fabien.chereau@gmail.com and for this you have just to click a bit starting from www.stellarium.org.

i don't like the word "pirating" as long as no weapons and violence are involved. but you need to question if the person who distributes this gratis package does in fact follow the terms and conditions of the GPL. my impression is he doesn't - and his excuse is that others maybe don't, either. (which we're not certain about.)

it's useless to discuss this, though. it would be a lot more important to find a way to help developers distribute free software, be it under the GPL or a similar license, in the ovi store... both gratis and commercial. it will also be important to help nokia understand possible implications, risks and chances... make it clear that there is a chance it could work. this will be a tiresome, slow process. it's the free software community who must be interested in this to succeed, nokia will not put much effort into this particular subject. it's a chance we have now - we don't know if it'll still be there tomorrow. sabotage is not useful at this stage.

I am the owner of the box that I share the package by accident. I put it there after I check the about box and it says "GPL". I did understand GPL, involved with the translation of it into my language and I am a core developer on some GNU projects.

I put it there and ask for opinions on the IRC and decided later I would not put it on the TMO since they point out that the developers of the mobile version were having some trouble against themselves, however the link leaked and I am not blaming Matan or anyone for posting it.

In short, I was going to remove it and I forgot, but I am not feeling sorry about that.
