Are you able to install xterm over a Bluetooth mobile phone connection? Probably about a 3MB download.

actually not, and I have tried to find the missing packages, libncurses5 (>=5.5-1), librtve4 (>= 1:12.2-0mh1) and ttf-bitstream-vera. I downloaded files from maemo repository but the new OS didn't recognize the ones I tried to install, it said they were corrupt. This is so hard to do if you cannot connect to the internet.

You should try some other wlan access point if you cant use internet from your own.

Then go to http://maemo-hackers.org/wiki/OssoXterm and follow instructions.

Install file http://maemo-hackers.org/osso-xterm.install

There is also instructions for no network install.

Do you have a local Starbucks? Or any neighbours with "open" networks?

Are you able to install this

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/load-applet-runn

DON'T try to install with the one-click-install file, instead install direct from the OS 2006 deb file available on the homepage (direct link).

Once installed, activate the status bar icon in Control Panel -> Navigation -> Status bar. Then paste the full gconftool-2 command into the Run... dialog. The command will be executed as soon as you save the dialog. Once you have got a working network, install xterm and if you wish uninstall the load applet.

As a last resort, can I install the prior fimrware over this version just until I can get it figured out...or Nokia fixes the fimrware so that the browser doesn't timeout, or will that give me even more problems? Maybe I should just re-install the new firmware and see if it was just a glich.

Thanks in advance.

BTW I am going to hit some free WIFI hot spots just to see if I can connect.

I haven't used load-applet-run myself, but as it's an applet you'll probably be able to find it in 'select applets' in the menu on the home screen (upper left corner of display). Maybe you'll have to temporarily get rid of some other applets if you're home screen is crowded.
