Android is definitely not an option because of Bionic, and because it feels so featurephone.

Oh well, time to build my own phone.
Here are the dashed lines of a possible path forward at the moment:

1) Get classic Maemo running smoothly on top of MeeGo (Cordia)
2) Find a phone that runs, or can be hacked to run, MeeGo Core OS
3) Build, promote and host an image for that phone on maemo.org that includes MeeGo Core OS and classic Maemo on top

Comments welcome

And I'll add a more distant third - it's not very easy to port open source linux apps to Symbian. With the N900 it was fairly trivial as it was Linux and X. This is one of the reasons I'm attracted to WebOS - it's Linux, and it can run X.
There is nothing inherent in Symbian that prevent more than one window being displayd in one app. Opera is the living proof and also the short term solution.

Regarding the "several thousands of invaluable and excelent Linux apps" being portet to the N900, I think it is safe to say that the only valuable thing about Linux is the terminal - if you are a linux geek.

Symbian not being continued is a concern, but not right now. Right now it is still the best if functionality is what you seek. Neither Android or ios come close. My E6 will be just as good a couple of years from now, better in fact due to updates.

So the N950 kit is now close everywhere because it is too popular

Pet peeve: that's current, not classic Maemo.

http://bug10738.openaos.org/ has a growing collection of hardware adaptations.

I have an N900...and even though it's almost 2, I still love it...

My ONLY gripes with this phone...no voice dialing and no Flash 10.3 support (which I'm surprised that no one seemed to mention as a peeve). Most sites work...true, but certain sites like CNET live will not work on my device. But that site works on Android phones.

I don't want to go to the dark side...Google is "big brother" disguised as a cute little green robot Shreky type thing...Nitdroid is as far as I go with that fascination...

Windows Phone??? Ick. No thank you.

N9? Beautiful, yes...Flash support, no.

Sigh....

What's a geekgyrrl to do?

Just sold my N900 which I had for 14 months and was a great device.
Have ordered a Motorola Milestone 2 since it has a keyboard and 1Ghz CPU. Its been out since Nov 2010 so is quite cheap at $350AU.
Will stay with Android for about 6 months and then see whats going on in the Meego world then.

That, and all previous versions. The UI evolved over the years, but was essentially the same Hildon. Fremantle is a complete departure from that.
