In my opinion, it is pretty weird that permissions need to be changed on dpkg. If that is a problem, there are probably other hidden problems we don't know about. When I start thinking like that, I start thinking about reflashing.

understand this, pls
i'm suggesting commands to run for two reasons
1. to gather information about what the problem exactly is
2. to solve the problem

for the time being we are in 1. and when i post a command, i need to see the actual output from the command.
no output ≃ no help
this is not bad will, it is simply the need to see what's going on.

EDIT: as geneven pointed out, having to change the rights on dpkg is pretty bad.
there is a way to reinstall dpkg even though it does not fix the underlying problem of corrupt installation of other packages.
the easiest solution out would indeed be to re-flash your N900 which would mean that you would also have to reinstall all your programs. data saved in /home/user/MyDocs does not get overwritten (if done properly) so you data should be safe

@ XLs
be aware that following command may make your N900 totally unusable.
if it does so, you will have no other option left but to re-flash it.

do you understand and accept the risk?
