If anything, Apple's App Store has shown that 1 euro is "impulse-purchase" terrritory. 1€ will result in just 40% of the downloads of a free app, but for 2€ it's already 5%, and 5 euro is 0.1%.

There are apps, like gPodder, that are free in ForMeego but paid in Ovi. Buying on Ovi is like a donation, and it grows the number of useful apps on Ovi ("battle of ecosystems" and stuff).

Just to add to the confusion: when I looked for a nice gps tracker / info app, I found Track@Way, which is now available twice on the Ovi store, just search for
track gps
and you'll see.

So that shows that somehow, it can work. And I agree that that is the better way to go.
However, also in that case, the dev has his own site, with paypal donation option and all. Which I would recommend to other devs.

BTW Nokia and operators take lots of the bit of donation that is sent - much more than the cost of Paypal - so if anyone has the choice, always donate via PayPal!

On a side note, thanks for uploading the .deb. I will donate as soon as the app is in a state in which my wife can use it... :-)

I have ported a great app to harmattan (with new features added like use of internal GPS) and published it in the Ovi Store for a small donate fee 1 euro. Of course link to the source code is provided in the application since it is GPL licensed, but I think you would support me, so I would create more great things for you.
While GPL allows this, it would make more sense for you to charge money from your own work and not to ask "donations" for your free application by selling other people's work. That just causes bad blood.

I'll be very surprised if someone doesn't package stellarium to ovi without a prize and call it "stellarium free" or something.

ps. if someone wants to support stellarium project - they take donations here: http://sourceforge.net/donate/index.php?group_id=48857

Elemental, thanks a lot for making this available.

Played with it quickly, and found the following:
- big question: I got to the point where I'm zoomed in to FoV 1.94%, how to zoom out? And how did I manage to zoom in?
- indeed, the UI should be improved to be usable;
up to there it's enough for me to donate. If you have PP, I'd say it's about 5 euros here.

However, I agree with the feature requests:
- use magnetic and level sensors to get orientation -- but ON DEMAND only! Let's not forget that Stellarium is a whole lot more than Google Sky Map, and one of the things that I don't like is that to look at something with Sky Map, you have to hold it in that direction, then zoom in, keep holding it there (in the worst case, all the way above your head...), etc... So please let there be a switch that toggles to not follow the actualy direction the device is pointing!
- in case you add a link to your own PP account or donate page (which I think you should), also a link to the stellarium donate link (see post above)

Additional 5 euros at this point, from my side.

BTW any donations from my side require that the app is downloadable for free, and GPL. Conditions which are already met in this case, at least at the moment.

On a side remark, to get rid of the VKB, just slide it down. When using swype, first switch to non swype kb (slide sideways at key level, not above at app level), then slide that one out of view.
Or the alternative, slide to the left to push the app to background, then go back to it (silly workaround that I found once, before I realized the VBK can be slid down).

Don't know, let me try (just putting IMG where your post had url):

elemental, since this works, could you perhaps modify the first post?
I propose:
- adding the screenshots (toward the bottom)
- adding the direct download link
- indicating your motivation is related to donations/purchases

And last but not least, please keep up the good work!

Quite so. A quick look at the N900 port, Stellarium Mobile, might provide some ideas.

Yes, but it seems Noctua Software excuse is that it does not have access to an N9 to port.
