@blipnl:

hardware: well yea it has the top spec of handheld gadget right now with 960x480 screen, full sensors + gyroscope... plus one of the speediest cortex a8 implementation, a larger-than-average camera sensor, etc

innovation: I think what happens is like the patent system here. It's easier to monetize your ideas on their platform, which can be a big carrot to motivate people.

snappy: hell yes, period.

apps: 235,000 apps from last count. The closest second place would be android at probably 60-70K now (last published at 50K). As for fart apps and ebooks: no app stores will restrict these kind of apps in the future, NOT MeeGo'S... so expect those cruft to be par for the course that will pad up all app counts on all mobile system for the foreseeable future.

experience: They get the highest satisfaction rating out of any other handsets in the market. Multiple surveys done (JD Powers, Nielsen, Cloud-something.. i forgot the name).

@ Ysss

I totally get what you're saying here. But for innovation: Yes they have some new stuff in their flagship device but not much more than a improved screen and new gyroscope. Also, Apple seems to steal technology often. Meaning using pattented tech, regarding the lawsuits against Apple from various companies lately.

Ofc the hardware is new and such. But.. the chipset is not fastest (ram, rom, maybe cpu and will it actually run 1Ghz or downclocked?) and camera is not amongst the best. Also screen seems great but not much better than existing ones, just slightly better/stronger/sharper than most flagship competitors. Gyroscope is new but the added value is debatable. You could also attend to the hardware that is missing (microSD, replaceable battery for example) that many customers seem to like.

What I meant with the apps, of course every platform has shitty apps ebooks and so on but the appstore has most of them percentage-wise, just to say that a huge amount of apps doesent mean the largest amount of useful apps.

Nevertheless, it's not a bad phone. And at a certain level I do agree with you on all those aspects, just adding my point of view.

@blipnl: As for the patent litigation part, unfortunately that's just 'business as usual' for these people. Nokia is also currently being sued for some unlicensed tech, so's htc, etc...
If you can point out a specific case of them 'stealing technology' and getting away with it, that'll be easier to discuss

Even without the 'fastest hardware' (+which I assume will also drain battery the quickest), they still maintain the snappiest performance around. So I think they've made a good decision there. There's been near-zero complaint about iPhone's performance numbers past the 3GS model, afaik.
Gyroscope's added value remains to be seen. All developers have access to the gyroscope function, so they're free to make use of it and innovate with whatever apps they can come up with..

I completely agree with the lack of build-in ports (memory card, expansion slot), but as for replaceable battery I can see the trade-off. If they truly deliver good battery life on this model, then I think they've done well with maximizing battery volume and throwing away all the space needed to make it user replaceable.

As for apps, I'd say that's a sign of an app store platform that's accessible, easy to develop for with a healthy market. How would other platform cope with the cruft? Install a censorship system? Deny ebook publishers?
Like I said, this is a trend that we all have to get used to. App Stores of all kinds WILL contain cruft and the total number of apps will still be an indication of the size of the platform in general (user + developers).

Impressive. 600,000 U.S. pre-orders in 1 day -- about half a day actually:

True dat, but also do read my sig.

I am more impressed with the OpenPandora guys. It took them a dozen of "two months" to deliver, but ever since they have started shipping, they are pumping out software almost every day: http://pandorapress.net/

So Pandora is right and the iPhone isn't?

An update on (some of) those 600,000 pre-orders:

http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news...re-orders.html

"This is ugly and getting uglier by the minute."

WTF Nokia? Again delays? Order cancellations? This could never happen to Apple! Oh, wait...

@nosa101: I didn't say the iPhone wasn't right, I just wanted to make a point that sale figures appear very low on my values list. And yes, I have all the respect for the enthusiasts who made OpenPandora, all the while maintaining a growingly distrustful but devoted following. Big corporations who steal ideas right and left and make loads of money on people's stupidity do NOT impress me nearly as much.

I think that question goes deeper than you think. "Cognitive dissonance" comes to mind in some cases, though others may be genuine.

N900 didn't have MMS early on, all of a sudden MMS was an obsolete, dated thing nobody really needs because they have email.

iphone doesn't have flash, all of a sudden flash is an obsolete, buggy software nobody really needs because they have html5

now here. no bluetooth transfer so bluetooth transfer has become an obsolete, cumbersome method to which email is prefered.

some cases may actually be genuine but rationalisation is known to increase as the price of the product increases.
