I disagree with you when you said that marketing won't help Microsoft. Whereas Vista sucked and so did the Zune, WP does not suck. Well it did, but the updates will change that. It is actually kinda good....for Microsoft. GOOD marketing will help it. Your examples simply point out bad marketing strategies imo.

I know plenty of people who would disagree with you about the Zune. Correction--MANY, MANY people... go ahead, go Google up some news articles about the Zune and youll generally find that most people had a positive impression overall, but that the Zune just wasn't selling. Vista, on the other hand, was supposed to be (as I recall Bill Gates saying all over the place) YEEEARS in the making and it's "that good!" Mind you, I think most people were unimpressed, though. In either case, marketing didn't help one iota. Windows Phone 7, so far, hasn't actually impressed anybody--not even as much as the Zune did when it came out. I strongly suspect that without strong-arm tactics and underhanded litigation, Microsoft is unlikely to innovate or market itself into relevance. The examples I poinetd out, simply point out bad marketing strategies--yes. That's been Microsoft's marketing legacy one groaning year after stomach-churningly-awful year of their ads.

Now lets feed danramos, gerbick and abill_uk. I guess you like this:
"Will the N9 be upgraded to Meego 1.3 and 1.4?
[Nokia] We will make the announcement in due course."
....and I must admit. This statement makes me a bit pissed...
I call BS but if true, oh my god, I'll jizz on the spot!

Most of what I read on the Zune have not been impressive at all. The Zune HD on the other hand I've seen many positive stuff...but then remember, there was almost no marketing for that product. As for WP7, I've seem more people impressed with the UI than anything. Not only that they have a high customer satisfaction.
At the end of the day though it is a Microsoft product, and with good reason their reputation is the platform's downfall. If it were google that had made it I bet you there would've seen a much better response. Having used it myself among many of the stuff Microsoft has produced, it is one of the best products that I've seen from them. Which brings me back to my point, if you make good stuff, and you push it with good marketing then it will prosper.
Microsoft initially brought a substandard product to the market with poor marketing....hence it didn't/won't sell. The only thing left to do now, is make it much better, and market it much better. That's that

Samsung is indeed looking for a core OS for several things. But IMO this urge is not lead by business reasons or even technical reasons, it's more about feelings or honour or something, maybe political even. All the wrong reasons. If Samsung means this for real, they will purchase Mentor Graphics, not go after some pipe dream.
