By the way...what happens if i make an update now the competition has ended. I want to release space invaders 0.4.0, which includes some minor enhancement (pauses when put into background, and a new icon)

oops, i updated it before your post (didnt want n900 users to not have the same version as n950 
...if it matters for the competition, the only change is the icon, and the pause when put into the background

I guess if your update is only about minor fixes and a changed icon you should be fine. But the fairness in mind you should reduce the updates only to updates for dangerous bugs or at example if youtube or twitter change their api and your application wouldn't work during the voting. (wasn't your fault in this case)
You could and should still continue the development. But wait with the relases until the voting ends. Only my opinion, but I hope it makes sense.
