Are you gonna make the gstreamer playback selectable in the profiles?

I can consider it if I find a proper profile that works with it on all operating systems. Making it selectable (maybe a field in the profiles) would be the best bet I guess. But I can't promise it too soon due to personal stuff. But can you paste all the fields you have in your h264 profile here because I got really bad results in OS X and just wanted to make sure I have a similar profile?

Also, I'm again wondering if Knots could be put to extras. I released yet another version of the client today and will release a new windows server today (with one new feature and a long standing bug nobody noticed I guess) and for me it seems pretty feature complete for a first proper release. I think the default N900 profile could be tweaked a bit first, but that's why I wanted to ask before going through the -testing phase:

Do you consider Knots extras quality now?
Is it too hard to get it working?
Knots is all about tweaking, but do you always have to change something by default?
If so, what should I change? I'm not talking about new features, but bad defaults or bugs.

Please share your comments, I'd hate to hear about them after I've promoted Knots to -testing.

For sure!

Totally understandable, take your time

I don't know why you keep on mentioning h264 btw, as I said I went back to mp4v for video. And I literally use the standard N900 profile but I changed mp2v with mp4v (no extra parameters at all) and mp2a with mp4a.

As a N900 owner I'd say that it is once it supports gstreamer - it runs absolutely flawlessly with it as far as I can tell from the brief tests I've run now.

Not at all - but I guess the Wiki page could be more elaborate about what codecs/bitrates one could expect the various devices to handle, and also mention that the streaming server easily could be the bottleneck if the playback isn't smooth.

I mean if the default profile in the current official release ran perfectly out of the box, I wouldn't be writing in this thread in the first place

EDIT: oh and btw, the reason why it didn't run initially, was because I've installed "Autodisconnect" and it nuked my wifi connection without me noticing

Maybe all possible command line options should be selectable in the browser settings (the not so important ones maybe under a "Extras" tab).

Hmm, I can't get this to work on OS X properly.

Well MPlayer is in extras and I'm sure some guis for it too so I can't really agree on this Besides, MPlayer gives a much wider support for different formats, but once I get gstreamer to work fine with all operating systems, I'll add it. But I can't see this as a show stopper.

That is true, I'll try to add something about this. But I've learned people don't read too well

Well it works perfectly here with what I have, but I guess you mean HD material and running out of cpu? I actually lowered the bitrate by default a bit, let's hope it gives a little smoother playback.

And thanks for the comments.

Lemme rephrase my statement. As a N900 owner I don't care what player Knots uses, but I find it essential that it utilizes the horsepower my device has - and that means activating the dsp. It doesn't have to be by default or with all codecs etc, but I need to be able to enable it. The way I see it it's really one of the selling points for Knots - to be able to stream proper high bitrate HD material onto the N900 while hardly compromising quality at all.

A few posts back you were asking what profiles people are using. I use a modified form of the "browser" profile (presumably not the one intended for the client!) with video bit-rate set to 1800 instead of 800 . Over my home wireless network I find this works better than the N900 profile where I can notice a *slightly* grainier background. Actually, I guess it depends on your network and which format you start with but with this 1800 profile I honestly don't see how the quality could be any better. It's screen-filling, smooth, perfect sync, no-glitches or blocking effects. Might be worth playing around more if using TV out I suppose. That's the beauty of Knots - you con get at all the settings so easily!.

Updated Windows server with latest changes. I also added a possibility to import and export transcoding profiles so it's easy to share your excellent profiles with others. They are just small gzipped xml files so you can attach them here or better yet, add them to wiki.

About the gstreamer backend. I started working on it and server is ready for it (with the new player field in profiles) but the bug that prevents gstreamer to use xv with http streaming affects Knots too so I can only get audio out (with dsp error messages) so it will have to wait for pr1.2. But once it's out it shouldn't take long to implement.

Just installed knots server on my win xp sp3 and updated it with git. Quite easy but I think that if i had installed git like in guide (without touching any options) then the command would not have worked because git needs to be in PATH environment.

I´m having trouble with some videos. N900 seems to stutter on some videos and i would like to find the reason for this.

-I have P4 3 GHz and if i look vlc.exe process it looks like it doesn't never go above 50%.
- Videos with lower resolution work flwalessly but videos with higher resolution stutter.

Also i do not like that it resumes after pressing STOP. I think that it would be good if there was play/pause, stop (exit without remembering position), close/back (remembers position)

And btw. Just Amazing work pal!

I think in Vista/7 it needs admin rights to add git to PATH and in XP it does so by default. If this isn't the case, can you correct it in the wiki? Maybe git for Windows has changed.

Is that with hyper threading? You can try adding 2 threads to the profile and switch mp2v to mp4v and mp2a to mp4a and see if that helps. Also try lowering the bitrate if that helps. This would be a good time to start sharing some profiles so we could find an optimal N900 profile for WLAN usage.

Most people like it (including me) and there's not much room for more buttons (if you use portrait mode), but you can always remove the resume point with the 1:23 button. But I added an option to server to disable media resuming server side. Just run "git pull" inside the knots folder, start server, go to settings and add a new setting

Description: Enable media resuming
key: enable_resume
value: 0
