Come on, folks.. it won't do anything by simply existing, it needs to be used by an application that is aware of it before it does anything you'll notice. Certainly the Hildon interface itself won't use it unless Hildon itself is updated to take advantage of it. Good luck with that hope, though. But then, Nokia tablets have left with me with the impression that they're all about potential but lingering and dashed hopes.

I'm sure it'll be GREAT for games and maybe a few other apps written for it, though.
but when it is going to be available for programming enthusiast?

Not quite. If we get Qt4.6 on the N8x0, all Qt (and PyQt) apps would implicitly gain GL acceleration (actual speedups, if any, obviously dependent on the way the app is written). Sure, there aren't that many of them out there yet, but IMHO it's simpler and can bring more fresh blood than backporting 3D hildon stuff - if we're thinking in Diablo terms, MeeGo/Mer^2 is a different ballgame.

think about the possibilities of opengl + MIDlets, we could transform the n8x0 in a platform of games. Maybe an OS with only games, on dual BOOT

is the accelerator similar in any way to the powerVR architecture of the Intel GMA500 graphics? I ask because that too has been a PITA for open source.

The GMA500 contains the SGX 535 accelerator, a direct descendant of the MBX accelerators in the N8x0.

iegd_mod.ko is native driver used for GMA500(SGX 535) and is closed.

No accelerator driver available is preventing linux handhelp device enter market.

Without accelerator driver, ARM cpu including Cortex A8 don't have enough performance for web surfing.
