My advice:

I bought an N900 2nd hand from some dude who didn't get along with the beast. (a week old).

The device was purchased in the US, I live in Israel, so no warranty for me.
I don't have (yet) any problems with the usb port, and I want it to stay that way.
The charger I got with the device was 110V ( at least the plugs were), so I went to a local store and purchased a Samsung charger with microusb, 5V, 700mA.
It will chrage the n900, a little slower, but it will charge - The interesting thing about it, is that it goes in and out very smoothly and easily, out of the box - no need for grinding or squeezing.
It cost me 10 bucks.

So if someone wants to safeguard the beast, i'd suggest buying a charger, even if it's not NOKIA branded, check that it works and connects easily @ the store, and practice care when connecting the usb port.

Eitam.

Im quite luck to have my n900's micro usb port still sturdy.

coz when i first got the device for 2-3 weeks, i usually connect and disconnect my n900 using the data cable of my 5800xm (the shorter one) and HELL, that data cable really holds and bites hard!! I even use too much force sometimes with the 5800xm, and its not as same in n900 but still, i kinda use force (specially in unplugging). after that, i read about this poll and boom!!! Paranoia!! I did the "thumb compression" trick that TexRat adviced on the charger (coz no probs on that one) and the "grind" technique on the data cable.

Still paranoid, i check the port it everyday!!

am i welcome to the club???

Guys. I have already got a new N900 because of broken USB port. it IS warranty case (russia). you should bring it to the big store where you bought it not service centre

The PCB expert I reached out to has agreed to see if he can offer some expertise. It won't be legally binding but it may help.

Not texrat but I do have some experience in this area.

Personally I grinded my N900 charger down for work use however at home where I get the most charges I use a Nokia N97 charger. If you look close you will notice a change in the prong design. I am not sure if they went with a cheaper male plug or what but there is a difference.

I would suggest Nokia N97 charger or taking a trip to your local retail store and seeing what they have. As long as the chrager provides the correct volts/amps it "should" work just fine. Some of the newer packaging on the cellphone chargers will have the plug exposed so you can try it.

Good Luck~

They should have used a port like iPhone. it's hard to stick the charger in the port, I get stuck like 3 times and that I plug in.

iPod, you just push it, the device sucks up the charger cable, easy to plug it in. but N900... design flaw..

I got the phone 2 weeks ago and loved it too but I end up selling it mainly because of the usb port concern. I am not the most unfortunate person on the planet nor the luckiest; thus there is a decent chance of the usb port failing at one point or another.

Since it is not an isolating incidents of loose usb port and there are cases when Nokia refuse to fix it and claim it was user fault. At the very least, this is the first time I heard that a high end super phone can be damaged so easily within 2 month of release, hell, some usb port went dead in 2 weeks. It really feel like the phone is beta in physical design in nature. Like Okhabin said, an iphone type plug for data transfer and charging batteries would be perfect, I current own the original iphone since 2007 and the usb still working damn well.

Re: Nokia responds to reports about the N900 micro-usb port getting detached

Hi all,

we have just received additional information from Nokia that a detached N900 usb connector should be covered and fixed under warranty.

It may take a few days for this information to reach all Nokia Care points. Apparently there has been some confusion until now in some countries but this policy should make it clear.

Warranty rules differ around the world, but in the European Union, the warranty is valid for two years after the purchase of a Nokia device. Read more about the European warranty at
http://europe.nokia.com/support/repa...epair/warranty

Most local Nokia websites also show the local warranty terms.

Naturally, normal warranty rules apply - so if your device was bought from another region or country, check if the warranty is valid in your home country. If not, call Nokia Care or visit your nearest Nokia Care point to find out what your options are.

This is freaking awesome. Texrat, and everybody involved, we deserve a freakin medal
