Everybody is talking a lot. Disputing philosophical points.

Meanwhile, I observe that the best openssl in a Fremantle web-browser can be found in QML-Browser [which doesn't get inside my internet banking, for whatever reason].

About half of my Internet Banking operations can be done in MicroB, Fennec is just as bad at interpreting HTML/JS UI as MicroB [with added Fennec slowness], and Opera is the last resort [despite me having to input login and password on a white page, where even "login" button's location has to be guesstimated] which somehow works.

Some websites, like Bandcamp, work only in Fennec. Some EBay web pages [like "View order details"] refuse to work in either of the mobile browsers.

Should I finally find some time [I have five tasks to do this week, plus busy Friday and Saturday and Sunday, plus busy half-of-week every week, plus on-going uncertainties in real life], I would like to gently look at what is happening with MicroB.

Because I am aghast at how it has its own willful option for Rotation, when I would have expected it to adhere to system-wide Orientation lock: Enabled/Disabled.

Because, if libmozjs, and maybe libxul, inside microb-engine can be upgraded, then Javascript compatibility could be improved, though it would require meticulous re-reading.

It does however tap into the maemosec stuff for its root certificates (makes sense, that way there is only one set of root certificates for the entire device)
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_Security_Services Which means that upgrading SSL/TLS in MicroB would require editing the same package: microb-engine.

So, what's the problem? Go to https://github.com/jonwil/microb-engine-ff24 and read source code, I think that's the latest version? Try to compile it if you dare, or even package it for Extras-Devel auto-builder. See if there are any improvements that can be made.

Thank you. Best wishes.

This browser thing has puzzled me. Before I had installed cssu testing and both the microb and opera were unable to open properly my email providers page so I had to use Fennec (not 17 but the older version). Now I have enabled cssu devel and I have done uppgrade on terminal. My microb can now open the email providers page and there are much fewer pages that won't open because cedrtificate problems. Now I mainly use microb which I avoided before. Don't know what is different compared to previous installs but I'm glad. Maybe it was that I did something wrong before and right this time.

And thanks for information. If I understood correctly the microb security is yet unsolved issue also with Leste? I have now used netsurf 3.8 with ED which is incredibly fast but lacks some stuff but fills quite good my needs.

hey endsormeans. Still using a N8x0?

Man that was fun, having 800x480 on the 770 back when everyone else had 1/4 the resolution on their portables.

I have some of the old emulators and games. Just binaries, no debs.

RE: N900 security - I don't see a way to keep it current, security wise, with a web-browser. I also don't see a way to make it handle modern websites with 256MB RAM.

The N900 can still do a lot - a lot - of fun things. But it's really not capable enough for me to pull out and check out something I need on the web.

Do you have some trick for webbrowsing with it?

Heya clort.
Yup ...of course I still use my n800's and n810's...
daily ..in fact.
haven't stopped.

and yeah...
concur.
256mb ram is pushing it for any device nowadays.
that doesn't help.
Sure there are work arounds ...
Sure one can do without this or that...
and sure we could get things fixed ...if we had paid support....
Possibly...

possibly we could pay mega smolleans to get a team to tackle the issues with certs. ...with the issues surrounding our outdated browsers...
and it wouldn't mean a hill of beans...
because a year later (or less) we are right back to our same old problems...

Maintaining .

We just don't have the dedicated nokia staff doing maintenance any more.
Spending their lives doing nothing but making sure that stuff will run....and keep running.

AND ...
Firefox , mozilla, Opera, ...gurgle..
freakin' WHATEVER browser organization or corp is NOT about to freely spend time, manpower and resource working on a version of web platform that will work for our n900's
That time is done and gone ..LONGGGGG gone.
Sure patching this and tweaking that...by a couple guys may work for a bit...but it won't last ...it can't.

- Not with the limitations of the (nowadays) limits of the n900

- Not with zero teams of maintainers (spending their lives ...being paid...) to solve these perpetually evolving and accruing issues.

- Not with the continuously evolving and demanding web requirements ..always changing...

- And (most certainly) not with the continuously evolving and demanding disparate individual websites and their own requirements ...that are always changing as well...
That is basically why for the n900 ...microb or fennec or opera or whatever ...can display "A" site ...but not "B" site ...or only parts of "A" or "B" site...for a time.

Most of the issues are not "static" issues ...they are perpetually evolving and demanding ones.
the other issues are pretty ground floor fundamental ...
And the likelihood of a permanent solution is slim...
to render modern sites that expect far more than the n900 can handle ...with outdated hardware and now limited specs...in compare...

The only way to approach this conundrum inevitably ...will be to pare down the view of said sites ...
Bare-bones them.
to be able to get anything out of them ..
and even that will still take folks perpetually maintaining said pared down options.

Daily functioning Leste I look forward to.
I would hope being able to utilize debian and their resource and support base will be a godsend.
But we are still fighting the limits of old hardware and external outside forces and their expectations to render the content they provide.

But to think that Leste will magically solve problems
or believe that someone else or bunches or teams of folks will suddenly come around to resuscitate the nxx0 line...maintain it...update the wiki ....whatever ...

That magical day of salvation ..
It hasn't happened yet.
This isn't a faery realm series called "Game of Phones" ...here ...
Let me know when it does .

Until then...

it is doing what one can within the parameters of the realms of reality and the limitations of our devices .

(don't get me wrong now...I believe just about anything is possible with our nxx0's ...but that infinite possibility becomes finite real rapidly once external outside pressures ...ie: browser, social media apps, etc...come to bear on what we can accomplish with our devices.)

The issues aren't singular issues in nature...that we face..
Nor are they closed loop issues...once solved ..everything is fine..
Nor are they issues we alone can do..

There is a reason why it takes teams of dedicated folks to create and perpetually maintain a website browser service...
and part of that reason lies with the ever growing hydra-esque chimera-esque nature of specific site requirements...
and of the increasing demand folks have of content

On the one hand I wish sites just loaded and ran smooth with no issues...
But on the other hand...
what fun would that be?
Not having to do odd tricks and wizardry to see if one can eek out just a bit more functionality ...
That is where the fun is anyway...

Have been using only hw keyboard and missed many characters. Now tried the virtual keyboard and found the missed characters: press shift when have the hw blue characters chosen in virtual keyboard. Soon I can update the wiki!

uh...
whatever can be accomplished with the virtual board is doable with the hw keyboard.
I don't think that requires an update.

Unless you wish to write a complete "how to" in the wiki for folks who have never touched a n900 before..

A quick Internet search? More than capable! Image editing and book publishing, on the other hand, remain out of reach for now.

The trick is in using nice websites, like tmo. Are you using give-mee-no-ads-cli, as well?

Maemish means, he found how to type | and other symbols, which aren't obvious from hardware keyboard.

Thank you. Best wishes.

Could someone who knows how to make a wikipage/instructions thread (wikipage preferred) like Security of N900 2019? I mean there us (not only me it seams) who do not have TLS 1.2 recognized on any browser (mine is 1.0 and have tried to update everything like openssl libssl maemocerts etc.) and at the same time some have TLS 1.2 recognized with Opera 12 and as I have understood it could be achieved also with compiled QMLBrowser.

An up to date 2019 guide which would go through:

1. Ssl and cert stuff

2. Setting up a firewall

3. Setting up a VPN

I think it could save time from everybody to have a page where to point annoying shouters like me who try even dona't know how and then ask help to solve self made problems/errors. I think even my cutetube2 problem could be solved already if the ssl and cert stuff would be done correctly. I am going to reflash again today (got internet connection stops and a system freeze on a certain location where it gives creeps) and I would just to learn to be a bit more secured.

But... I don't know how but I can try and so I will - again and again.
