My bet? OnSale wasn't making enough of a margin on the now-much-cheaper device so THEY are discontinuing sale of it.

VERY good point. OS2008 N800's will have a different SKU if Nokia keeps with their history. It also makes sense: Don't want to retail the old device because users will have to complain about an OS upgrade as soon as they take it out of the box.

Having lived off a car battery for power needs a few times, this isn't really an issue when you're traveling by car. Anybody who is going to use the N810 with GPS for car navigation just needs a Nokia car charger or a Car Inverter (the smartest thing one can buy to avoid $$ dedicated charger cords). The battery life just isn't going to be there to run the GPS for any length of time due to high CPU cycles in mapping mode and running the screen at high/full brightness. Just like any standalone GPS, it's going to have to be plugged in. Done with the car trip. Take the tablet with you and it should be all charged up.

But, yes, if you have two devices each running off their battery, you can get double the battery life, and might get a better GPS experience ... but you're also going to carry another device.

"but you're also going to carry another device" How about leaving the dedicated gps in the car?

In my garage, yes. Anywhere else it'll likely get stolen.

But, what I mainly meant is that when you fly somewhere you take the GPS with you, as that's where it is needed it the most.

You should be good. I ordered mine from them just prior to 6:30pm Friday. The UPS tracking number reflects that it is in Atlanta as of 3am this morning. I should have it in my hands tomorrow afternoon, and will be a totally statisfied customer if it arrives in good condition.

You should be able to check the status of yours using the link below. You'll need your order number and zip code. The UPS link for me displayed gibberish on the top half of the page, so you may need to scroll to the bottom to see the shipping status.

No luck after all: just checked my order status, and saw the "discontinued" written in blue. I wonder why you put in your order late but were able to get it?!

This sounds like a good theory. When I was working for an Apple reseller, we went through the same thing with a product update. Its not like Nokia can put an OS update CD in the box :-)

Another theory is that Nokia are trying to drive N810 sales for the Christmas period, thus drying up N800 stocks.

That's a shame. I double checked, and I ordered mine Friday at 6pm, got an "in process" message at 6:02, a "forwarded for final processing" message at 6:41, and then a message saying items were shipped at 2:45am Sat morning. I'm feeling pretty lucky conisdering the sudden shortfall in stock now.
