Qwerty: I earlier reported in this thread that I'd tried to install it from Red Pill mode and got a "file corrupted" message in Applications Manager. I tried it again just now with the same result. Rather frustrating. (I also tried your dpkg -i suggestion from root in xterm, but that didn't seem to produce any worthwhile results either -- but I'm not certain I did it right I don't know what to enter exactly after dpkg -i in the command.) Thanks for your assistance on this. Jim

Sorry about that.
For dpkg -i, you put the location of the id3 deb after the "-i" .
So if you placed the libid3tag0_0.15.1b-8_armel.deb on the root of the internal memory card you would type:
dpkg -i /media/mmc2/libid3tag0_0.15.1b-8_armel.deb
But I just saved the deb that was attached to that post and installed it from my memory card in red pill mode using the application manager.

Check out the screen quality of the particular Archos model you're considering before buying one - I think you'll appreciate your N800 more for it!

Also, what's everyone using for their music playback?
I'm after something fairly basic (Ability to load/save playlists and manually browse files; Not the way N800-MediaPlayer does it...), but fast and efficient; Something like PocketTunes would be perfect...

Next question: I now apparently have both mmpc and mpd installed, but how does mpd manifest itself. It doesn't identify itself as a separate application in the Extra menu, and mmpc (which does) comes up in appearance the same as before (before the mpd was installed). How do I get it to scan and play my music? Anyway, many thanks for steering me to a successful installation procedure.
/etc/init.d/mpd start-create-db

To scan, you may need to runas root, but I think it does that automatically the first time...Code:/etc/init.d/mpd start-create-db
Anyway, once the directories are scanned, mpd runs automatically in the background. In mmpc, hit the configuration button, and tell it to connect to 'localhost', port 6600. You probably want to check 'autoconnect' so it connects next time you start mmpc. Press 'connect', and it should connect. Configure any other desired settings, then close the configuration window. Open the playlist window to select tracks...
Have fun. I really hope you like it, after so much installation hassle.
On the subject, the N800 is definitely not suitable. It just about plays an episode of little Britain with mplayer and most of my other vids lag like hell. What I don't get is that an N73 with coreplayer and a 220MHz plays movies fine and a N800 with an 400Mhz processor cant. I wouldn't care if I had to watch the videos in an limited size but I don't even have the option to do that. Although with proper conversion, it plays nicely.
But I think I will have to buy an Archos/Pocket PC/S60 device for my videos and use my N800 for the internet (which is what I bought it for and am happy with how it does on the internet)
