Or has Nokia made an equivalent gesture with the N8*0? And so it is normal practice to do so?
Well, what I've gotten so far is:

* Kernel source (Nokia has given out similar - see kernel-source-diablo)
* Firmware maker (as in, making an "upgrade image" - Nokia has not given out information on the FIASCO format -but- it's a matter of simply asking for it I believe)
* Descriptions on how to boot fully from SD in case the internal flash dies (Boot sector and all stuff) and utility to create this (Nokia hasn't given something similar but it is very rarely needed provided you haven't messed up NOLO and X-loader)
* Information on how to hook up a RS232 console to access bootloader directly

And I've requested bootloader sources (Qi, u-boot), and we'll see how that goes. When that is done, I can actually make a fully open source firmware for it. It's amazingily hackable.

Hi stskeeps, thank you for the detailed reply.

It seems from what you say that Nokia is pretty decent in making available information but that Moses is willing to be totally open.

Or as least as open as is required to produce your own firmware. Again I find this to be amazing, it hearkens back to Sharp in the early Zaurus days when we had many choices of firmware options.

I really miss all of that so this is what i have been waiting on. I suspect that continued reports of your progress here will persuade me to buy a device.

Looking forward to your next update.

stskeep,

I haven't seen anyone ask these questions and I'm burningb to know.

1) Since mer works on both devices, is it faster on the SmartQ since it has a faster processor?
2) What things don't work on the mer version of the smartQ that do work on the N8*0?
3) Given the choice of both units and now the same OS, which hardware would you buy today if they were both side by side in a store? That small form factor looks awesome next to the oversized N800.

Thanks in advance.

Nokia is working on open sourcing the flasher and at least distribution the fiasco-builder (not sure about the source status).

1) Faster-ish. Can't benchmark yet - Having a working X helps. 2) WPA2 atm 3) I would get the N800 for the speakers, Stylus and d-pad. Also, 2 sd slots and huge community surrounding it.

Woah.. a 7" tablet, with those easthetics looks kinda nice. And if, like the Q5, it can run Mer ... that'd be interesting.

I wonder if they'll make a SmartQ9, as well ;-)

Yeah. I suspect it can. My kernel sources has the Q7 too so.

I know this is more of a Mer question than a Moses SmartQ* question, but ...

can Mer do the Maemo virtual thumb keyboard ... in portrait mode? On a 4" or 5" screen, that probably doesn't make much sense, but on a 7" screen, it seems like you could have the bottom half of the screen taken up by the thumb keyboard, and the top half of the screen still displaying a usable portion of the app.

Seems like if 7", 9", and 10" screens are going to be supported, that'd be a good option to cover for Mer.

Good question - we don't have a thumb keyboard yet I would love a thumb-ish keyboard on the smartq atm.
