I have some questions about spoofing the iPhone in tear.

I used the useragent I had used in MicroB to spoof iPhone and I pasted it into tear's user_agent string in Options:

Mozilla/5.0 (N8x0 like iPhone; U; Linux like Mac OS X; ARM; en) AppleWebkit/420+ (Gecko, like KHTML)
It does make websites regard my N800 as an iPhone.

In GMail, that means, in horizontal view, I have to magnify to 200% for it to fill the width of the screen; and I have to magnify 130% for it to fill the screen in vertical mode. But, in vertical mode, if I magnify more than that, to read the text more easily, there is sometimes no wordwrap, and I have to scroll sideways. Also, if I scroll to the bottom of a long email, or to the bottom of the first page of my inbox, the view bounces back to the top of the page. I cannot hold a view at the bottom of a long page. Is this what other users are experiencing?

In MicroB, if I wanted to go back and forth between the Regular useragent and the iPhone useragent, I could click on a bookmark that did almost all of it automatically. What I do in tear currently is open Options, go to a text file where I have the desired useragent string, copy it, return to Options and paste it in. Is there an easier way to switch useragents that I have overlooked?

(Fortunately, tear is so good now as a near-standard-desktop browser for the Tablets, that, if it isn't easy to do, I won't generally miss spoofing the iPhone to get those truncated website renderings.)

(Also, in addition to a General Thanks for tear and the recent update, Special Thanks, Bundyo, for Select All and for auto-select of the URL in the address bar.)

I used different user-agent and didn't have the scrolling problem in GMail, but maybe I overlooked it:

For the width problem you can probably use some custom CSS to set the width to 100%, thus to allow reflow on zoom. I can probably include a Spoof iPhone option in the menu, dunno how legal is that. Later though when options can be set for domain, it will be much easier to handle.

If you literally mean "legal," I can't imagine that spoofing an iPhone is illegal. (And having been a lawyer, I have a pretty good imagination in that arena.)

(But maybe I missed a joke?)

So please include it! (Actually, I'm not sure it's worth including. If it's worth using the iPhone spoof, it's worth having it readily toggled. But I don't see much advantage, since you've made the browser work so well for almost all full-fledged sites.)

I changed to the user_agent in your link, and I still have the same problems. Not only can I not look at the bottom of a GMail inbox page, I can't even look at the middle without it automatically scrolling all the way back to the top.

The webpage also doesn't make use of the NIT's screen width, but I figure that's to be expected.

@GeraldKo

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I hadn't known about the spoofing the iPhone by modifying the user agent, but even with the 'width' problem it has made viewing gmail from the tablet a much more finger friendly experience!

What's better is that the iphone google reader is FAR improved over the bloated 'desktop' version.

You can test it using the following link:

Enjoy!

This should take care of the width if added to userstyles.css:

Code:
#inbox[style*="320px"], #composeview[style*="320px"], #conversation[style*="320px"], #moreviews[style*="320px"] { width: 100% !important }
I revised it to be less possible to affect other sites.

I'm not sure how I get thanked for Bundyo's work, but, heck, You're welcome!

You don't find that when you scroll to the bottom of a GMail page that you get bounced back to the top?

I meant not the actual spoofing, but providing the users with an easy-accessible and named option to do so

Still legal. At most, maybe you should have a little TM after iPhone.

Haha.. I thank Bun enough for tear. Besides, he's got many more coming!

I've never noticed getting bounced back to the top after scrolling to the bottom of gmail, no. That's really strange. I can't begin to imagine what might be happening, or why I seem to be immune to it at the moment. I've tested on a page with few conversations, and one with many. Not a single problem with viewing.
