But that would cripple Maemo 5 to the point where a keyboard would be necessary and limit the range of devices that can run it. Plus, you would have to slide open the keyboard, and hit two keys, which is rather awkward and a step backward for a UI that has been designed with a lot of thought.

True, which is why I thought it was a stupid aesthetic move. But in looking at the pictures I see a top button that looks like it could be a sleeker modified version of the _ fullscreen + key arrangement of the n800 top keys. but maybe it's not as it isn't clearly labeled with +_

I had hoped Nokia might begin the developer device program earlier this time, before the announcement/release even. I'd like to see developers have devices in their hand quickly after the release this time. In the past there's been some awkwardness with new-device-holding users begging for fixes, tweaks, and enhancements from developers still waiting for coupons.
