Most important is what they want to say - after all, I want to know if I should take the call or not. A dealbreaker if it can't do that, I think.
I was kind of hoping it'd have a sexy voice and say something like "Hey, Gorgeous, I have X on the line for you asking about a date... do you want to take the call?"

I don't expect the world's most beautiful phone. I already owned one - it was the N7710 (yeah, I know - sue me )

I expect a better browser than was on my 770 and is on my N800. I expect a better browser than was on any of my iPhones (yes, I have owned all versions of the device - and now none).

I am expecting to enjoy that all available ways to reach a contact are all integrated into the one application.

I expect, from an always on, always connected, device that the applications/widgets/web pages that connect me to the Net will be there at the flick of a finger(nail if I want) ready to do my bidding.

I also expect, because I've been buying these toys forever, that -every once in a while - the device will hiccup and disappoint.

I expect to be able to listen to my music - 95% of which is ripped from the CDs I own - while doing many of the other things the device can do. I am disappointed with the lack of playlists which I just read about - I'll live.

I expect a competent phone - it is a Nokia after all. I also understand where this device came from, so I get that it won't have all the features high-end Nokia phones have.

Only two things I will miss from my iPhones. Google Maps - sorry, even OVI maps on my current N97 is not as smooth to use or as straightforward. The other thing, the Koi Pond application.

I loved my 770 and still think the N800 is good at what it does. I was not expecting the leap forward that the UI on the N900 represents - and I am looking forward to it.

Haha, we could create an application that does that. We just gotta get RevdKathy to do the voices. =P

Kjmackey, there are playlists. You can populate them and even create new ones. The problem seems to be that doing so is simply awkward and not obvious, so people don't find it off the bat. In fact, there's a brainstorm going on right now to find a way to make the UI more intuitive.

So you can do what you want - and there's a thread round her somewhere explaining how.

I expect Free/Open Source software and customizability and the lack of artificial and arbitrary limitations.

I “am” expecting a device to be a true all-in-one for phone, web, games, media and decent photo features. My concern is how impressed will I be since using the Droid for almost two weeks. Droid is a very good device for phone, messaging, web (sans Flash) and game emulators work well and make the G1 seem very out dated.

This comparison will be a good test of what is really more important to me for a device I “depend” on. One concern I have is that the N900 display is 9% smaller and due to the aspect ratio compared to Droid, widescreen movies will be 12% smaller on average. Cropping is not an option since that would defeat a key reason for getting the N900- no converting files.

I guess it will come down to how much I miss the phone-centric interface, Shopsavvy, Google voice search, and Navigator with layers, to what I gain from the media and Flash feature for web with the N900.

The huge bias that remains is KY has 3G coverage everywhere (seriously) and I am lucky to get Edge by Tmo in a lot of places. I must admit I am looking forward to comparing them! I am afraid the strengths and weaknesses of both will offset and it will be a coin flipper when all is said and done.

If Tmo had better 3G coverage in KY, I think the N900 would be the favorite by default and game over already, but that is not the case.

added:
Looking forward to the duel! One thing off the bat against Droid is Android and "big brother" syndrome. Google's "hands" are in everything now.

Excellent - many thanks, RevdKathy. I'll have to wait till my N900 arrives (Nokia USA /lost/cancelled/did "stuff" to my pre-order so I suggested they forget it and have ordered from Amazon). So, before the end of the year I'll get to try the playlists.

Good. We look forward to hearing what you think of it.
