Bought that same Motorola branded charger, not only does it work, but the blue LED 'M' logo looks cool (and isn't style important?)
Plus it was like $5 on Amazon with free 2 day shipping if you have a .edu address.

@amorek13. Thanks for the photo. Yeah, I have one almost exactly the same as that. It doesn't work when using the N900 usb cable. Very odd that this has not been mentioned by anyone. The N900 is the first device I have owned that does not work with one of these standard car charger to usb adapters.
Sheeeeeeeit!
I have a Dual USB Power from mobileblackbox.com
model MMB-DUSB815
It list 2x 500mA, but charges the phone just fine while using the GPS. (Have not tried to listen to music as welll...)
I only modified one of the ports to charge the N900.
And left the other unchanged for other charging needs.
Unscrew the top to reveal the fuse.
Remove the ring and the two halves come apart.
Bottom of board taken out.
It shows the two columns of 4 pins of the USB ports.
Detail of the two middle pins soldered together.
(And view of the 4 iPod resistors.)

Have Fun.
