This is how I solved my charging problem:
I have a Dual USB Power from mobileblackbox.com
model MMB-DUSB815

It list 2x 500mA, but charges the phone just fine while using the GPS. (Have not tried to listen to music as welll...)

I only modified one of the ports to charge the N900.
And left the other unchanged for other charging needs.

Unscrew the top to reveal the fuse.

Remove the ring and the two halves come apart.

Bottom of board taken out.
It shows the two columns of 4 pins of the USB ports.

Detail of the two middle pins soldered together.
(And view of the 4 iPod resistors.)

Have Fun.

Bought that same Motorola branded charger, not only does it work, but the blue LED 'M' logo looks cool (and isn't style important?)

Plus it was like $5 on Amazon with free 2 day shipping if you have a .edu address.

Indeed Style is important, maybe the most important thing, says my Girlfirend, Paris...

Having a glowing "M" for Maemo ain't bad either!

I have the same one from Amazon, works fine on my N900 and my brother's Droid 2.

A nice, non-warranty-voiding way of getting it working with any car charger:

* Get a bit of sticky-back aluminium tape (you can get this in most DIY stores)
* Cut it to a strip which just covers the two middle contacts in the USB connector of your car adaptor (around 3-4mm).
* Carefully stick it over the two middle contacts and wrap it slightly over the end of the plastic (but not all the way, as then it would short out against the metal of the USB plug.
* Push the Nokia USB lead in, pushing it up away from the tape so you don't accidentally dislodge it.

Job done.

Sheeeeeeeit!
just solder the 2 middle pins in the charger (shortcut them) , assuming the usb port looks like that |||| just shortcut the middle 2 >> ini instead of iiii and there u go !
