Of course not! I've not seen anything from you Kathy but a willingness to help others and a willingness to learn and be helped.

It's frustrating to me that I do not have an N900 to test this. This is why I was hoping someone else would... what we need a complete listing of screenshots from HandBrake on what settings work for the N900. I would provide a detailed walkthrough if I could.

What I can do, however, is I will try and load texaslabrat's profile into my HandBrake at home. Once I figure out how to do that, I will try and write you a step by step on getting his profile loaded into your HandBrake. Once it's loaded.. try and make a movie and let me know if it works.

Just to be sure - when you select the "ipod" preset on the right side of HandBrake - you aren't changing any other settings in HandBrake right? Just Select Source, Select "iPod", and Rip?

I open handbrake, load the source and tell it I only want one chapter (one ep of wombles!).

If I then click 'ipod' it chooses everything, including a screen width of 320, and the h.264 codec, which others have said doesn't work. So far, I have changed the codec (as instructed) but I'll try it just as it comes up for ipod if you think I should. The ipod settings are at a bitrate of 700.

I'll let you know what I get.. no, if I leave the wrong codec I get 'unable to find media file'.

What I need is someone who is making it work to talk me through all the sttings. I have fiddled around so much now I don't know what I've tried and what I haven't!

... I've been converting huge .mpgs to .mp4s using FormatFactory to play them on my Nokia n900 ... while it seems to work pretty well during the fast scenes there is serious pixellaton ... is that just due to the MP4 compression (the files are tiny in comparison to the originals so I'm guessing there's a lot of compression going on) ... is it due to FormatFactor being a poor converter? ... is there a better file type that I could be using?

... and, is there any reason people keep suggesting iphone settings in this thread? ... surely the iphone's screen res is about half what the N900s is ... and isn't going to be that great when played through the TV out ... I went with an output setting of 800px width which looks great when there's not serious pixellation going on ...

... ideally I'd like to be able to play my original .mpg files on my n900 ... and after installing the codex support package this does kind of work for small files ... but, the number of frames played per second is low enough that you can see the individual frames ... there's also no way of forwarding through the file ... and with a film sized file the phone takes an age to open it (so long that I've not actually managed to open it!) ...

You know, if it weren't for the fact that I can play the two vids that came preinstalled without trouble, I'd be beginning to wonder if there wasn't something wrong with my video player.

Is there somewhere I can d/l a little sample video to test it? - I know there are some in ovi store - or will be when it finally opens.

i know you dont want to use the software i messaged..

but you have to understand that the software itself isnt illegal, and you can d/l legal stuff on sites like the example one i sent you..

and you are in the uk, therefore even if you were abit naughty u wont get caught..

and there is surely nothing wrong etically or morally in you d/l stuff from a legal program in the format you want that you own in another(dvd)

I too would be interested in the best settings for Handbrake (for Windows). I have not managed to convert anything successfully with this tool.

I have been able to copy across some XviD files that worked OK.

A sticky on the best settings Audio Video Codec's, Bit Rates etc would be much appreciated. I cant find much in this site, a few links here and there for the N800/810.

RevdKathy,
Please consider installing cygwin from http://www.cygwin.com/
cygwin provides unix commands inside windows. It really is a really easy install and would make copy and paste methods much easier to follow. It is also a good way to get your feet wet using unix commands without having to reboot. Installing cygwin is mostly clicking on default selections, except I would recommend selecting unix style line endings and the "all users" option.

Also, it might be a good idea to select everything instead of just the default packages.

Mastering a subset of unix commands and assimilating the unix philosophy can make many seemingly complex tasks simple, easy, and fast. Sort of like the benefits of learning to walk or operate a motor vehicle.

Once tablet-encode (which does require perl and mencoder (part of mplayer/mencoder)) is installed, there is no need to tweak settings. It is basically a wrapper around mencoder that is pre-optimized for each Nokia tablet.

perl is not some obscure dependency; it is a basic tool. mencoder is an extremely veritile encoder. tablet-encode tames the complexity that comes with versatility.

Because I have seen others say that iPhone vids play fine in the N900. At this point, I just want to get Kathy to be to make a video that plays on her N900... we can worry about optimizations later.
