I agree with fatalsaint - reflashing a device to simply correct some corrupted files is ludicrous.

It's sad/funny when technology discussions get so religious...

Actually, people have come to expect that to be the solution when their phone breaks. There are a number of users flashing for the PR1.0.1 update rather than go through the hassle of uninstalling apps for space, so I'm inclined to agree with him.

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?

That's not true either... having root on a device is very risky.. since it's really the governing factor of all the power to begin with. Even an "install from file" option is just another way for a user to execute something as root.

I am not against things being available in a terminal. I may not support pretty GUI's for most of it.. but a Terminal is the domain of people who like to play. You average user would look at instructions for a terminal and want specific help FROM a professional before continuing... or just deciding it's too complicated for them and they'll wait for a package for it.

A GUI on the other hand.. well.. anyone can click "Break device now" button in a hot-pink.

So, I support root on the device by default - even if obtaining it is through some obscure or extreme sillyness that annoys us that use it to death (we'll shortcut it anyway).. but it needs to be there *somewhere*.

All above options are fine.. bury it, banner it, turn it into that totally obnoxious Windows Vista "Are you REALLLLLLY fricking sure?!??!!" 300 times.. but it needs to be THERE somewhere.

And Dak - You are correct that this problem should be fixed at the source.. but other problems COULD arise.. someone may need to fix their phone without internet connection for some reason - and have never needed root before. I personally was in the military and went on several deployments.. the only internet I had was through MWR community machine - not my computer and certainly not the phone - and no phone signal. If someone gets on here with a problem with their phone that they can't get on the internet with - a reflash is the only option?

Silly.

Even if it's working, it was planned to be removed, and it probably will be removed.
