your correect the cpu was underclocked then set to 434mhz if i remember rightly too :-)

The N900 uses the OMAP3430, which runs at 600 mHz; it is not underclocked and Nokia will not overclock it.

That's true, but 434mhz was the norm for ARM11 and all Nokia TS S60 phones are using it now.
All the manufacturers who use the same chipset as Nokia(Omnia HD, Palm Pre, Droid etc) are running it at 600mhz or 550mhz because those are the numbers given by TI.

what about OS2008 & N800?

(yes I know n810 has same cpu and n800 was underclocked when launched if i remember correctly)

so no way overclocking above 600mhz because 600mhz is already overclocking by 2 steps.
