Thank you, I will try that app. I must say that I am a little daunted by the prospect of editing a .ini file as I am a complete n00b, but I'm sure I will find detailed instructions around here somewhere.
I'll search when I get home.

I wish that there was a checklist of things that experienced users could recommend for new users, and that it came with the phone, in a list!

Let's say for example, that transition-control fixes my problem, what about the 100 people throughout Europe that just bought a N900 today, how in the world will they find out these things?!!

It really is the responsibility of Nokia to introduce the customer to this new way of getting to know the hardware. And really, to prevent the problem arising.

That's what I mean by Maemo never has nor said it would do that.

Feel free to complain about Modest. I'm willing to bet I'd agree. Hell, I don't even use Modest, just use the browser for Gmail... that's it.
Ugh don't even get me started on Modest. The only reason why I put up with is my multiple email accounts used, and how it's tied into the notification system.

Nokia really should have made an api that ties into the notification system, so any email client could be used.

@L M: Great point. But what other client do we have available on maemo? Claws? It needs a huge UI redesign work. What else are there? (gui preferred)

I am trying to maintain this as best I can, hopefully you will find it helpful. I think it would make a good sticky and/or wiki page as well if I ever get around to figuring that part out

You mean, "I make my research up before it's released?" This is like blaming Ford for a false review from Consumer Reports. If a store or news site is telling you things about a device that turn out to not be true, you can hardly blame the manufacturer, especially when they made no such claim.

As for the software side, there currently is pretty good Java support, and limited MIDP support. See the solutions thread for more on that and other things that have viable fixes or work arounds.

This is by far the most intelligent and brilliant post I've ever come across here on t.m.o.

Your argument is reasonable but it leads to nowhereland. I would say: Well, if you're comparing it to a computer, then why doesn't Modest have the features of Thunderbird or Outlook on a computer? Isn't it unfair that it takes as much time to load but doesn't have the features? You would say, well it has a lesser memory and processing power. I would say: Yes, because it is a smartphone!

My argument is this: Lets say it IS a mobile computer and not just a phone. Isn't it supposed to be MORE powerful than a phone? Isn't it strange that its a "mobile computer" and yet its native e-mail application is a) slower than the e-mail applications of major smartphones and b) lacking in features compared to e-mail applications on phones.
"It's a mobile computer, not a phone" .... leaves room for interpretation, doesn't it. This is what I think about it (and just to make sure: It's not my interpretation of what Nokia's marketing might want to say about the device; it's how I see it personally):

A mobile phone is just that. It's a device built around one use case (and maybe a second one). Its OS and applications are tightly integrated, optimized and written with all the constraints of a mobile device in mind. Symbian performs great on very old and slow hardware because of that.

I call the N900 a mobile computer because it's OS was never designed to run on mobile phones. Whatever you have (Linux kernel, X11, DBUS, GStreamer, the Gecko rendering engine, GTK and Qt,...) comes from the desktop world. It's not integrated at all. It's not optimized for devices with low resources.

So saying it's a mobile computer doesn't mean it's faster or better than a mobile phone. It means that it's a different technology and I should think of it as a very small laptop, not as a very fast fast phone. They start building mobile computers now because mobile hardware ís finally at a stage where it can run software originally designed for your desktop.

The advantage you gain from running a desktop OS on a device like the N900 is certainly not speed. It's compatibility. It's the MeeGo-promise: One OS, no matter if it's for a pocketable device, for a netbook or for a home entertainment system.

That's my personal definition of "mobile computer" vs. "obile phone" in terms of OS and software platforms.

You needn't agree, but if you understand what I say, then you'll see why for me it's perfectly reasonable that a mobile computer will be slower than a mobile phone when performing certain tasks... yet not as powerful as a desktop computer because certain limitations still exist plus some developers think it's necessary to dumb down user interfaces for mobile devices (which is wrong IMHO).

[Invisibility Cloak]
I do agree with all the points made in the first post.

Although I do love the n900, I really wouldn't want to swap it for anything else what so ever, but at times the responsiveness and slow downs and laggy screens are quite annoying.

I've had to overclock just to make things that little bit better but lets be honest I shouldn't have too.

Anyways not sure if its been mentioned in here, but the photos thing you mentioned, well there is a program called tracker-cfg in extra devels, you can tell the photos app to only look in certain directories, great for getting rid of podcast artwork. Works for music and videos too.

Sorry for misunderstanding you gerbick.

The thing is (and I don't know if this really is my fault), I didn't even know and care about what e-mail application the Phone has. Heck, even after getting the phone, I didn't know that the e-mail client is called Modest. It didn't matter how the e-mail client HAS BEEN because for me, its a new device and not a newer version of the N810 or N800.

schettj, Nokia Messaging is anything but smooth. I was in Finland and had a Nokia Messaging account, then the trial expired and I couldn't use it anymore. I am in Pakistan for the summer and my old NM account had disappeared so I thought maybe I can register again and get a new trial. I managed to create a fresh account with an active subscription but it doesn't show any of my folders. So basically, its useless.

Either way, why should push e-mail only be available via Nokia Messaging, especially when it isn't available with the phone and sold separately? Except that you can't even buy it from Nokia.

benny1967, if its all about the Meego promise then I guess the N900 is a lost cause.
