You know what's surprising. That nobody had come forward about these extra charges until really now. I can't recall anybody else talking about it - until this thread.

This part, I agree with in general.
BUT the OP has already put his remark in a specific context. He was complaining about how apps are more expensive on maemo than on iPhone. You've misinterpreted his post.
I thought this elitist attitude is reserved for the mindless iSheep drones...

no I didn't. These are the most idiotitic arguments ever.
I am totally pissed about people who think they can change inevitable things by ranting here. that is where my "elitist" (imo realistic) attitude comes.
I usually get x0 - versions of games at least couple euros cheaper than ps3 versions. What gives?

but they should have had a disclaimer clearly stating that extra money will be charged if you're purchasing from another country.

I only expect to pay the price that is shown alongside each application - no extras. Nothing. If that means Nokia need to pull their finger out and create a UK or "local" version of Ovi then so be it, that's a cost they'll have to bare if they want to be successful rather than p1ss off every last one of their non-Finnish customers who will only make one purchase and then never return.
Maybe Nokia only need to create a "local" payments system, one for each country to avoid these "transaction" charges (I'm assuming they're appearing because of foreign currency - I've never seen such charges on a Visa or Mastercard Credit Card). Nokia need to make the purchase of applications as painless as possible and these unexpected and unquantifiable charges make it anything but painless. Ordinarily, the hidden charges of $1-$2 wouldn't be so bad when buying something worth $100 or more, but when these hidden and unexpected charges amount to almost 50% of the price of the item being purchased, it's utterly ridiculous.
