Yanno... the Maemo way... in MeeGo.
What in the hell are you talking about? MeeGo's gonna be open source and that's all there is to it.

Meego Core yes, but NOT the apps or manufactors own UI. Most of Nokias UI/apps will probadly be closed source.

Mike's right. Maemo is also "open source", but not really. You have to struggle with closed-source drivers that the open-source wouldn't be able to properly operate without and the appalling dependence on closed-source applications for the rest of the architecture. Hence the description of "open core" -- open-source software that cannot operate, or operates at a crippling, diminished way, without the closed-source software.

My concern is that MeeGo itself may be open-source, but it may not operate properly on Nokia devices without Nokia's idea of blessings upon consumers with lots of work to make sure you NEED to use closed-source drivers and applications that will undoubtedly come packaged in Nokia's firmware images.

Maemo sadly has it's share of closed parts - but we're mostly stuck with them due to the lack of really open alternatives that would interface well (yes, I know, it's mission impossible without proper docs and all). OTOH with the upcoming releases, even in a worst case scenario, it has already been told that there will be a no-DRM mode in which you can flash whatever your want (stock MeeGo comes to mind as the most likely alternative) and hack it till your nose bleeds, so what kind of lockdown are you talking about ? It's not like there is bootloader lock or rooting required. And yes, I know my nose is going to get rubbed in BME et al, but at least it's part of the HW adaptation so you can get MeeGo images with it.

I'm not entirely sure--but I have a sneaking, yes cynical, suspicious feeling that they're taking all this time to figure out a way to screw us. I just don't like how long they're taking to release something, or to even announce or tease. I get this gut-wrenching sense that there's work being done to figure out a way to create a severely diminished OS if you wander away from the open-broken Ovi mode. I.e.: You don't want to let us control your experience.. FINE! No GPU/DSP/PHONE/etc.

Note my words as a prediction. :P Let's see how right or wrong I end up being. I'll be far happier if I'm wrong.

My hypothesis is that the N9, as was rumored (A8-based) is now dead and along with it, MeeGo/Harmattan. No one would buy into that half-*** solution, since it wouldn't even be MeeGo compliant. Seeing the announcements today, that hardware would be an embarrassment to release now and I suspect Elop is forcing them to play their cards close to their chest until their followup is really ready, with full support for their OS of choice.

As for your prediction of them delivering "spite," I doubt they'd put the effort into that, since it would require them going beyond even Motorola to target a minority that just wants an "opt-out." As above, I think the time is simply them being hush-hush until around the time 1.2 is ready, and there's a parallel port of MeeGo underway similar to the N900 to newer hardware in lieu of MeeGo/Harmattan.

Then we'll see if they're worse than, equal to or better than Samsung in terms of code dumps.

I dunno... we've been promised warm delicious openness in the past with Maemo and ended up eating cold soup that they spite into instead.
