"Ovi way" is because I think that a lot of N900 users doesn't know what "opensource" and "donate" means.

I think so because I know some popular applications that never received donations (or almost)
That sounds very wise. I just noticed this thread, but I would donate.more than those 3euros if you released it as opensource. I bet it would still make some good money on Ovi while getting better with help of the community.

If you really want to capitalize on it I will just put it on OVI and hope for best.
(have you thought about the consequences that Nokia might hammer on you on OVI for changing their core keyboard with yours?)
Anyways, goodluck

Edit:
Not saying that it will be scraped from OVI but if there just happens to be a new official PR from Nokia and is not compatible with your package and then you are not around and working on it then your project is scrapped automatically.
My code is based on http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/..._Input_Methods so I really think that new PR (that probably never comes) doesn't change anything about this.

Why you said "have you thought about the consequences that Nokia might hammer on you on OVI for changing their core keyboard with yours?"? It isn't illegal I think...(there are others vkb in repository). However application published on OVI must pass trough a "validation process"

About pirate software: yes it is possible but:
A- I really don't want introduce some strange protection-check
B- If you want pirate it, you will do it also without source
C- Not all N900 users are so experienced to compile code for N900

EDIT: you can read the tags that someone send: do you think that this guy have ever donate for something?

Other way is say something like this: "If donation reach xxx euro I will give it free and open" but I think that this is a bad way

I think this keyboard should having the same amount of language support as the uKeyboard. can you not make use of the keyboard layout or something from uKeyboard? Look I would be happily contribute in implementing more language support to the language I can read and write. If you provide the tool to do it then I will help you making this keyboard better and probably be a selling point as well. Keyboard with just english will not going a long way. Keyboard with multilingual support will go all the way.

Most people here spoken more than 1 language and write more than 2 languages. So I guess if you send me the tool to make the layout fit then it is for your own benefit

More people would like your app. Also you can try upload it to OVi and list all the supported language.

Just put it in ovi and put price that you like and release source code in git. Of course someone will pack it and release link here to package but then what? But I warn you that when you put price on things people tend to demand much more and you as seller are responsible on how your app works.

There is thousands of N900 users who even do not know this maemo-place and most of people like to keep things simple and safe and will install stuff only from Nokia. IMO if itīs legal then go for that. Itīs something from middleground

It's fully legal to replace the keyboard, assuming it doesn't have Nokia code, question is as hawaii said, will they accept it? It's replacing a core system component, which if broken, can lead to bad things.

(But then again, there's swype on Symbian, but that's tested by Nokia...).

And as for the "I have closed source components on my device, one more wouldn't matter" suggestion, we're trying to reverse that, not help make the device more closed.

Keep in mind that lots of open source projects are a lot bigger than a keyboard, have thousands of lines of code, and don't ask for donations

Edit: and here's an example on one that recently got a donate button in the about dialog, but nothing more:
[sbox-FREMANTLE_ARMEL: ~/columbus-0.9.3/src] > cat `find` 2>/dev/null | wc -l
5020

wait...I know open-source world a bit because my job is based on that type of application. I know that a good amount of code is released open but not all and also I know that "my" company is not based on donation: money are earn from support or by selling customization for customer...How many good project exists in repositories but are discontinued? IMHO I think that open-source can exist on long period if also exists someone that sponsorship it.

Columbus is a project more big and more complex than mine and if they don't ask for donations...perhaps a reason exists (a sponsor? an university-research? a sand-box for develop a sellable product? they are rich from family? :P). For example in future I have to develop an application for face detail recognition for an university project: I will not ask for donation or something else because I have to do it

In this background I can't sell support or customization but I'm selling (perhaps) an additional feature. People that don't want spend 3euro can continue to use fastsms with all improvement that will come in future (plugin is based and depend on it, so will never exists a version A and a version B).

Hope you can understand my english and do not get me wrong

If it's is 3NZD then I would pay for it
Happily swiping my CC on Ovi for it just as long it support more than English language. Also if you want me to contribute by helping you create more template for Cambodian (khmer) language then I would love to help like I did with uKeyboard.

All I want to see is a better keyboard software that is better than the stock keyboard. If you are interested then give me a PM and I'll help making your chance of selling this software better in Ovi.

Actually, I developed Columbus with the intention of making it commercial, either through Ovi or my own site, I was going to release it before Christmas as I needed the money. But then I decided I'd release it FOSS, so I did. I added the "Donate" button in the latest release. I'm not a rich man, I'm doing the project in my own time because I enjoy it. I'm currently looking for work so I have a lot of time I can devote to MeeGo and Maemo development, which I'm doing, but I'm also looking for work, because I need money and with 0 donations currently it's obviously not a viable income model.
