Reinob, I think it clearly says more about our (UK) quality of education than how broken gnome is.

I have read Gconf help exactly 0 times. The whole '--type=string' thing...sheesh, '=' is the simplest of all operators. I am not even a graduate of computer science! I am not a graduate of ANY science!

I can only conclude either the OP is legitimately, medically ******ed or he is not really a graduate of anything.

As for the guy who tried to reflow his GSM chip by heating it with a soldering iron...if you thought that was a good idea, perhaps paying attention to these 1st year remedial classes would be a wise decision.

Edit://I just read the previous page of this thread. Math...useless...to computer science... I am without words.

Son, if there is ONE thing you should focus on to be a good programmer, it is maths. Maths is what separates us from the Apeoid humanzee's with their under developed sense of humor and crinkled hands.

I would give ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to go do university and school again, you have one shot TheoX. Don't **** it up.

Double Edit:// I am legitimately employed and I have a '4 car...1994. I have a 1.9 Xantia Turbo Diesel. Greatest car ever. So good I just bought another (1994 Xantia) to keep as a spare. Coincidentally, if anyone knows of any 1.9TD Xantia going cheap in the UK (<£300) PM me.

Tend to say otherwise, or maybe I am not spoiled. I see students around me who get everything from their parents.
No way my parents give me money to buy things like devices or cars. You don't NEED that is their argument and actually I agree while I ofcourse want a newer laptop, a car and such but I actually don't need it but if I want it. I am free to work for it. BTW I am not complaining, actually I should thank my parents for letting me feel some responsibility. Responsibility sucks though.

Way off-topic. When I was 14 I saved for what felt like a whole year to buy the HP48S.

Guys, mathematics is worth every fvcking thing in this world.

Yup! I actually bought the HP50G a couple of years ago just to see how things have evolved. I still pull the HP48 out before the 50 when I need some calculation done.

And.. roll drum... in case there's some interest in this: ever since I bought the 48S my "life project" (to call it something, I'm now 36) has been to make an emulator for it. Not one-to-one, but something I can use on a computer.

The first one was in 8080 for the Amstrad PCW8256. Later re-done in Basic. Later redone as a bootable-from-diskette-entirely-self-sufficient-look-mama-no-BIOS operating system running in protected mode for the 386 (yeah, Linus beat me about the general-ness of the OS, but mine was more elegant . The latest incarnation (in plain C) is a kind of implementation of the SysRPL language (the bastard child of LISP and FORTH, look that up and give a new light to your life!) which happens to compile nicely for the N900 (even the ncurses interface).

I'll open a thread one of these days. If I forget, ping me.

It's a '06 car by the way, and before I was 18 and could drive a car, I saved up the money I got from school because of high grades. When I turned 18, I was disappointed because I didn't have enough money to get a car... My parents didn't have too, but they helped me find this car I own right now, from a leasing company, a car that was not paid and recovered from the owner. And then... I bought this: A 06 Fiat Albea, the 2nd model (check prices).

In this winter I had an accident with it, and the damage was about 1500 euros (for the non-believers I can post pictures with the car + service invoice)... I needed to make a loan so I could pay the repairs, since I started loving this car more and more.

So that's why I am broke right now: paying the loan, gas, college books that teachers make us buy (not to use them, just to BUY a useless book, to keep @ home, to give that teacher some money - P.S. EXTREMELY OVERPRICED BOOKS) and some harmless weekend fun, like going to the countryside, having barbeques and stuff...

I never said I don't make money, I just said I'm broke a.t.m.

The only laptop my parents bought me was 6 years ago. I was in 9th grade @ high school, and I needed that laptop to follow a course to get in a Siemens internship. It was the 1st and the last internship like that (for the 9th graders with excellent results in programming) and they took as for 3 months to Siemens in Austria. Since then all my laptops I have: the netbook (i own it by selling my old laptop - the 1st one i've got), a toshiba which I've got from a friend which I helped buy a new good laptop and he asked me: you want it, here, have it, and my tablet pc, which I got second, it's the perfect aid for college (fujitsu t4220).

As for the car... trust me I need it. The college is near the exit of the city, where you can find lots of gypsies and "thugs", and I go around on my feet, maybe at night (winter is the worse), and I don't wanna get robbed my those a*sholes (like they do most of the time).

..so you own all these devices listed in your sig, a beamer, probably at least one laptop too, a car, and probably live in your own rooms/apartment? Are (maybe) also both of your parents working? Yay. What a nice life this would have been in the eastern bloc in the middle of the '90ies. (and yes, i've still got to experience a decade of GDR)
