I don't think we necessarily need to sum up the lack of member involvement to either moderating or changes in structure alone.
I think that probably accounts for a very negligible % of the overall reasoning why people aren't participating or are absent (as in gone possibly for good).
I'm not saying that the numbers for said reasoning don't exist.
Nor am I disregarding anyone or anything out of hand...

I just think they are more down to the fact that ever since:
a- Nokia's leaving...many thought it was the end for maemo..and left then
b- with firmware and other bits awkward to get at...many found that that was the reason to leave...figuring that the end has to be near consequently...
c- the natural migration of members who were here because they loved new and cutting edge tech...most obviously have left to go to newer devices and platforms.
d- we have been losing members to what...um...attrition?...I suppose is a good word.

It happens. We just need to keep the fires lit here...
Come up with cool stuff now and again.
Make things easier for new people to understand...(or we will most certainly die out..)...we went through it all...right up to the golden age...and now full circle..(I believe a golden age will come round again)...
we naturally will lose people...that is a given...we just need to be inventive, patient etc ..in regards the new generation of users which have been coming...

I think the moderators are doing a good job.
Has anyone around here seen a mod who went mad and started doing a slash and burn?
the moderators themselves are moderated for cryin' out loud.
if a poster has an issue with a moderator there is the court of appeal to the supermoderator moderating him.
It doesn't get more fair people.
The safety's are in place.
Members getting upset, bent out of shape, and fearful of their fellow peers (who are also their moderators) is nothing less than creating an atmosphere of worry and fear ...which isn't necessary.
As well I think "running generalities" such as...
"For a long time now people here have been leaving because...[insert obtuse reasoning based on actual zero collected real data]..."
(the reality is all one has to do is go to the threads about why people are leaving...in them..the overwhelming reasons are ..
a-wanting newer devices and newer platforms..
b-lesser...the frustration surrounding the difficulties in developing for our devices)
that's like saying to my spouse...
"you "always" do [insert grievance] all the time..."
there is no exact time,
no exact situation as example...
and even if there were..
even if I gave an example or two or three...
it is a terrible tar and feathering...
stating that simply because an incident occurs once or twice...
then extrapolating that and saying it happens "All the Time" isn't fair...
and that is what I'm hearing now from people here.
It's not fair and it's not true.
As well keep up disparagement of good members names and their motives...
Keep it up people and you'll get your wish...
Everyone has a limit to what they can take.
Including our fellow members and friends who are taking their free time and helping here keep the peace.

And here is mine ...right here.
Whoever drives the last stake into the heart of a mod making him quit.
Whoever that person is... I don't "wish" ...or "desire"...I demand that person then become the replacement mod.
o-mymymymy yes...
I assure you that they wouldn't last long...
but they would be great fun to play with while they were...

There is no ulterior motive, no hidden agenda...We are a civil community...(or try at least to be civil people here)...interacting with our friends... lets all try to remember that and get along.
Else it won't end up well.

Cool. So the only thing I need to do to stifle the opposition is to report them?

By the way, the above post deeply offends me and I have reported it. In accordance with "one complaint is enough of an excuse", I am expecting the post to be edited or deleted.

you get banned if you overdo any of it. Simple isn't it?
This whole thread is about one moderator overdoing it. Is he going to get banned?

Anyway, the fact that I don't actively take part in discussions here any more as much as I used to has several reasons. Overmoderation certainly is not the most important one, but it does have an impact. There's just no point in participating when, right in the middle of a heated discussion, your post plus some of those that support your point of view mysteriously disappear. Of course you could complain, find out who it was, fight the system... But after so many years it's no longer worth it.
Nice finger-pointing rant btw, you are aware that I can lookup any claim of such kind and just tell that in the last 4 months you had 1 (one) post removed because it was in direct reply to an inflammatory post that has been removed too.

Yes report them, if I get to learn that you are feeding it you are on the line as well! Reporting just because you dislike something wont cause any action. If "Report This" would cause any automatic immediate action it would not need moderators...

More and more I feel this thread is just trolling moderators and admins, there are some valid points - have been discussed - those mods concerned do read this thread...

I have to congratulate myself in being an extremely cool-headed netizen, having never been moderated AFAIK.

(and in the same breath I do confess going on a trolling spree now and then, however I seem to be doing it so skillfully I never get caught )

Can you link to that? I try my best to get this sorted but if you guys think that some Mod crossed a line then do ask, keeping it silent and I never know will not bring a solution magically.

UPDATE: I found some things I did not like, I already notified the mod about my dislike.

I didn't see anything offending about your reported post. So I won't delete it
At least on the topics where I have the moderator rights.
(Yes, I do not have mod rights on all topics)

Of course I can't. Those posts have have been deleted, remember? Vanished. Disappeared without a trace. I have never been told why. Only from your response in this thread have I finally figured out that I had a "dirty mouth" and that I was reported. By whom? For what? What exactly did I say wrong? That is still a mystery.

I do not mean to dig in old cases. The only reason I mention it here (other than because you ask) is that this is the kind of outcome I expect. When you get reported, I expect the moderator notifying you: "You have been reported by members X, Y and Z. The reasons they provided were A, B and C. Do you have anything to say? Reply in 24 hours or have your post deleted."

I try my best to get this sorted but if you guys think that some Mod crossed a line then do ask, keeping it silent and I never know will not bring a solution magically.
This whole thread was about people trying to bring things like that in the open. And all this time you were telling us to shut up and put up, expressing your unconditional support for the moderators.

Me? Confused? What could possibly give you that idea?

(By the way, I did "report" this chemist's post as mentioned here. It was meant as a tease and I thought I made that clear in my report, but if not, I apologize.)

Iirc you have been out of line back when you complained about it, maybe dirty mouth is of to strong, please do not take every word literally, you are a native we are not.

As you have no idea what I talk behind the curtains, do you really think I have unconditional support for the mods? I try to protect them from themselves atm while I am also teaching them a lesson from my side, I am not happy about what happened and some things I did just learn from further investigating accounts and logs.

We are far beyond teasing here, this is a serious issue, so I take such "teasing" as blunt trolling and a reflection of how much you actually care about resolving it when you start teasing an admin while he is trying to resolve your demands.

Most of this came up because of Jalyst crossing lines and understanding housekeeping as cholrinating the whole place, I neither like that at home nor do I like it here so I had a word with him. If he understood to not to chlorinate our livingroom floor, we will see in the future.

For your wish, about resolving personal disputes ABC, I won't. I have tried that not only once and it ALWAYS ends up in me being the bad guy... bad admin, bad whatever, I read back from the post that has been reported to get the picture then I act according to common sense.

So if you now think that this always turns out to me deleting the reported post you are again wrong, not only once I edited a semi-offending part and told a reporter to grow some balls and sometimes even infraction points were handed out for troll-feeding! Call it whatever you want but some attitude is better left outside of tmo. Those chicken troll games are not really worth anyone's time but still people like to get someone off his chair. And to get someone off his chair some neat phrasing is enough to get a non-native off his chair, or a bad phrasing to get a native off his chair... some intentional some unintentional. The last one I checked was unintentionally picking up a fight, Jalyst surrendered by deleting the posts, yeah would have turned out differently if he went by me but as I said earlier and also in the council-mail, it is sometimes better to not get me involved as I do pick only one side and that is maemo, at some point I will revoke mod rights just like anyone else would do.

As this thread was originally not about your personal issue but about the general transparency of moderation I call it here, if you need to further explain, blame, flame, send me an email and we discuss further.

I talked to HtheB (not lately) and Jalyst (just now) and hope they understood my points. If you have further issues with the transparency of mod actions let me know directly if you do not like to get in a personal argument with a mod - and mods, if you think you get involved personally, step back and ask upstairs to drop in, as soon as you are personally involved you are in fact biased, even if it is only to protect yourself.

PS: I know that you cannot link to a deleted post, link to the thread, if you know it link to the page, I see deleted posts.
